If your Control4 or smart home installer has stopped trading or stopped returning calls, a different authorised dealer can normally take over your existing system rather than replace it. They register the controller under their own account, survey what is fitted, and pick up support and updates from there, usually without new cabling.

What happens if your Control4 installer stops trading or goes quiet?

Control4 systems are sold, installed and supported only through authorised dealers, so there is no direct line to Control4 itself if your installer closes, moves away or stops answering the phone (Control4). The reassuring part is that Control4 says its systems continue to work locally without a subscription (Control4), so lighting, heating and AV scenes should carry on running as before. What you lose is the ability to make changes, add devices, get software updates, or call someone when something stops working.

The same principle applies to Lutron systems such as RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks. These are also programmed and managed through a dealer-linked account, and Lutron publishes its own process for sharing or transferring access to a project file with a new myLutron account when a different dealer takes on the job (Lutron).

Can any Control4 dealer take over another dealer’s system?

Yes. OvrC, the account and device management platform behind Control4, has a system takeover feature that lets a new dealer add a customer’s existing devices to their own account once the customer has asked for continued service (Snap One). Depending on how the original project was set up, this can mean transferring the controller and its devices to a new customer location, or formally changing the dealer of record on the account (Snap One). None of it requires the original installer to take part or hand anything over directly.

As a Platinum Control4 dealer, we take on systems fitted by other companies regularly as part of our takeover and maintenance service, whether the previous installer has gone quiet, closed down, or simply isn’t the right fit any more.

What does a takeover survey actually involve?

Before anything is changed, a proper takeover starts with a survey to establish what is actually there. That typically covers the controller model and the Control4 operating system it is running, the touchscreens, keypads and remotes in each room, how the network is set up and whether it can support the system properly, and how the existing programming and scenes are structured. Where the previous installer left behind design documents or a project file, this is much quicker; where nothing survives, it takes longer but is rarely impossible, since most of this can be identified from the hardware and network itself.

Network health is worth checking carefully at this stage, since a Control4 or Lutron system is only as reliable as the wired network and Wi-Fi underneath it. A takeover is often the first time anyone has looked properly at whether the switches, access points and cabling are still fit for purpose.

Is your system old enough that a takeover means an upgrade too?

Sometimes. Older Control4 controllers have hard limits on which software they can run, and systems still on OS 2 face an added deadline: Snap One has confirmed that OS 2 cloud services, including remote access, are being retired on 4 August 2026, with OS 3 or X4 needed to keep them (Snap One). We cover this in more detail, including which controllers can and cannot move to newer software, in our guide to upgrading an older Control4 system. A takeover survey will tell you whether your system falls into this category before any work is agreed.

What should you ask before choosing a new installer?

A few questions make it much easier to judge who you’re dealing with:

  • Are they an authorised dealer for your system, and what tier (Control4 publishes dealer status from Authorized up to Diamond)?
  • Do they have an in-house maintenance team, or is support outsourced or ad hoc?
  • Have they taken over systems from other installers before, rather than only fitting new ones?
  • How is ongoing support priced: a maintenance plan, or reactive call-outs only?
  • Can you see examples of their own completed work, not just brochure photography?

We’re a Platinum Control4 dealer and specialists in Lutron lighting, founded in 2012, with an in-house maintenance team and Control4’s Circle of Excellence award for 2023, 2024 and 2025. That combination of accreditation and continuity is exactly what to look for when trusting someone with a system you didn’t originally choose them to build.

Frequently asked questions

Will switching installer mean re-wiring my home?

No, not in most cases. A takeover works with the cabling, equipment and programming logic that already exist. What typically changes is the dealer account the system sits under and, if the hardware needs it, the software running on the controller.

How much does a Control4 or Lutron system takeover cost?

It depends on the age and condition of the system, how much documentation survives from the original install, and whether any hardware needs replacing. A survey establishes this before any work is agreed, so there are no surprises partway through.

What if I have no paperwork from the original installer?

It makes the survey take longer, but it’s rarely a dealbreaker. Controller model, software version and connected devices can usually be identified directly from the hardware and the network, even with no design documents to hand.

Can I switch installer for just my lighting, or does it have to be the whole system?

You can switch for one part of a system, such as Lutron lighting, without touching the rest. It’s more efficient to deal with one installer for everything, but it isn’t a requirement.

What happens to my system while it’s without an active installer?

It should carry on running the scenes and automations already programmed into it, since Control4 systems work locally. You simply won’t be able to make changes, add devices, or get support until a dealer takes it back on.

If your system has lost its installer, or you’re simply ready for a change, get in touch or visit our showroom in Walton-on-Thames to talk through what a takeover would involve for your home.
