What are Surbiton's homes like to work in?
Much of Surbiton was planned rather than grown. When the railway station moved to its present site in 1838, Thomas Pooley laid out a "New Town" around it, and by 1865 houses lined Victoria Road, Claremont Road and Brighton Road. Between 1864 and 1887 several developers built the substantial mid-Victorian houses of Surbiton Hill Park as a middle-class estate, some Italianate, some in the red brick and terracotta of the Aesthetic Movement. St Andrew's Square, with its terraces of 1876 to 1884, is the only Victorian garden square of its kind in the borough. The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames protects all three as conservation areas, and the Art Deco station itself is listed at grade II.
That history shapes how we plan a job here. Victorian houses have solid brick walls, tall ceilings, cornices and fireplaces that most owners want to keep. Chasing fresh cable routes through every room is rarely the right answer, so we plan wiring around floor voids, cupboards and the loft, and we use wireless control where a cable would cost you plaster worth keeping.
Which services suit a Surbiton house?
- Lighting control that leaves the walls alone. Wireless Lutron lighting control retrofits cleanly without chasing walls, so one keypad by the door replaces a bank of switches and a single press sets a whole floor for the evening.
- Wi-Fi that reaches the top floor. Solid walls weaken wireless signals from room to room, which is why a properly designed data and Wi-Fi network, with access points wired back to one cabinet, is often the first thing we put right in a tall period house.
- Music on every floor. Family life in a three-storey villa is spread out. Multi-room audio and video puts discreet in-ceiling speakers where you want them, all on one app.
- A media room in the back reception room. Many Surbiton families want a room that still works as a sitting room. A media room gives you big-screen picture and immersive sound without handing the room over to film entirely.
Does a conservation area change what we can install?
Mostly it affects the outside of your home, not the inside. Kingston has 26 conservation areas, covering about 9.4 per cent of the borough, and inside them, alterations that would be permitted development on an ordinary street can require an application. External cameras, anything fixed to a front elevation and new cable runs on the street side are the details to raise early. Speakers, lighting control and a cinema room inside the house rarely touch the street scene. Listed houses add a second layer: Historic England advises that works affecting a listed building's character need listed building consent, and that can include work inside the house. Rules vary from house to house, so please check with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames planning team before work starts. We can supply the drawings and product details the council may ask to see.
How close is our nearest work to Surbiton?
Surbiton is about 4 miles from our Walton-on-Thames showroom, which makes it one of the closest parts of London we cover. We have designed and installed systems for homes in Surbiton, and two of our published projects are just along the river. In nearby Thames Ditton we fitted out a garden room that stands over 70 metres down the garden, running a dedicated fibre line across the garden to a Ubiquiti Wi-Fi system. In Walton-on-Thames, a media room renovation replaced three separate remotes with one Control4 system and hid Paradigm speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen, a screen that lets sound pass straight through it.
What does it cost, and how do you start?
For a dedicated room, our published band is £15,000 to £25,000 fully installed for a professionally designed small cinema. The display, the speaker package, acoustic treatment and seating move that figure most. Lighting control, Wi-Fi and multi-room audio are priced room by room after a survey, so you see exactly what each floor costs. We have been designing and installing since 2012, we are a Platinum Control4 dealer, and Control4 has given us its Circle of Excellence award three years running, in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
The easiest first step is a short drive. Come and experience our demonstration cinema and a working Control4 system, then we visit your home to survey it. Book a showroom visit or book a free design consultation.
