Flats as well as houses: what does that mean for a cinema?
Leatherhead grew up beside a ford on the River Mole, where the river cuts its valley through the North Downs, and its homes span more than a century. Houses went up on Fairfield, Highlands and Kingston Roads between 1900 and 1905, the Givons Grove estate followed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and the town has a large number of flats: at the 2011 census they were the biggest single type of home in Leatherhead North.
That mix changes what people ask us for. In a detached house off the Downs, a dedicated cinema room may be realistic. In a flat or a terraced house, the better answer is often a media room: a living space that delivers big-screen picture and properly designed sound, and still works as a sitting room the rest of the week.
Media room or dedicated cinema room?
A cinema room is built for one job, with controlled light, acoustic treatment and seating arranged around the screen. A media room is multi-use: usually an 85 inch or larger 4K TV, or a concealed projector and screen, with a discreet 5.1 or Dolby Atmos speaker package in the walls and ceiling, a small rack out of sight, and one remote for all of it. Our Epsom media room and sports bar shows the idea: an 85 inch Sony TV recessed into the wall, acoustic panelling to fix poor sound clarity, and blackout blinds on the same control pad as the lights.
If you can give a room over to film, the numbers are honest and published. A professionally designed small cinema room typically costs £15,000 to £25,000 fully installed, and our small cinema room cost guide breaks that down line by line. The nearest published cinema to Leatherhead is our Fetcham cinema with pool table and bar, just across the Mole.
How do you keep the sound in your own room?
This is the question flat owners ask first, and it deserves a straight answer. Two different things are involved:
- Acoustic treatment improves the sound inside the room by controlling echo and reflections, so dialogue is clearer at lower volumes.
- Soundproofing reduces how much sound leaves the room, and it usually means construction work to walls, floors or ceilings.
In a flat we lean on the first and design around the second: careful subwoofer choice and placement, speakers aimed at the seats rather than the party wall, and system settings calibrated for the room. Where the building and your lease allow it, we can add soundproofing materials as part of the build. It is also worth checking your lease before any work that involves the structure.
Lighting that makes a small room feel like a cinema
In a room that doubles as a lounge, lighting does a lot of the work. One press can dim the downlights, bring up a low wash behind the screen and close the blinds, and another press returns the room to normal. We design that through our smart lighting and shading service, using Lutron or Rako depending on the home, and it works in flats as well as houses because wireless systems avoid chasing walls.
Leatherhead's conservation area: what should you check?
Leatherhead has its own conservation area, and it is one of three in Mole Valley, with Dorking and Brockham, where Article 4 Directions add extra controls to protect features that contribute to the character of the streets. If your home is inside it, speak to Mole Valley District Council before changing anything on the outside, such as adding an aerial or dish. Inside, most of our work is a matter for you and, in a flat, your freeholder.
We have designed and installed systems for homes in Leatherhead, and we are a Platinum Control4 dealer, winner of the Control4 Circle of Excellence award in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Bring a photo of your room to a free design consultation, or book a showroom visit to hear the difference acoustic treatment makes.
