By choosing certain furnishings, you can alter the acoustics. We’ll work with your interior designer to get that just right.

Where necessary, we can apply acoustic treatments or soundproofing materials to keep the cinematic sounds contained.

What a home cinema installation includes

A home cinema installation from us covers the whole room, not just the equipment: design and 3D visuals, the screen and projector or TV, a Dolby Atmos speaker system, acoustic treatment, seating, lighting scenes and one-touch control, then calibration and aftercare from our own maintenance team. You can see and hear it first in our Walton-on-Thames demonstration cinema.

A professionally designed small cinema room typically costs £15,000 to £25,000 fully installed; our small cinema room cost guide breaks that down line by line. Larger rooms and reference-grade equipment go beyond it.

A home cinema room or a home theatre room?

They are the same thing: a room given over to film, sport and gaming, with the screen, sound and seating designed around each other. If the room also has to work as a family living space, a media room may suit you better, and we will tell you honestly which it should be.

Every home theatre room we build starts on paper. Our home cinema design service sets the seating, screen size, speaker positions and acoustics before anything is ordered, and our guide to home cinema room layout explains the thinking if you are planning your own. In London, see our page on home cinema installation in London.

  • Oxshott: a 120 inch acoustically transparent screen, a KEF 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos package and six recliners in two rows, designed around a sloped ceiling, with separate Control4 modes for films and football.
  • Weybridge: a basement cinema with a 126 inch acoustically transparent screen, in-wall KEF speakers and a sports bar alongside.
  • Esher: a concealed projector lift and motorised 120 inch screen above a lounge with a bar and pool table.

What a home cinema installation involves

Every cinema we build follows the same sequence, and knowing it in advance helps you plan the rest of the build around it.

  1. Consultation. A free first meeting, either at home or in the demonstration cinema at our showroom, so you can hear how different screens and speaker systems compare.
  2. Survey. We measure the room, note the windows, doors, ceiling height and anything that limits where a screen or speaker can go, and look at how power and cable will reach it.
  3. Design. Drawings of the room layout, a complete equipment list and 3D visuals showing how the finished cinema will look. Adam Wolfe, who founded the company in 2012, takes the design lead on every cinema.
  4. Approval. You sign off the design before installation is scheduled, so nothing is ordered on a guess.
  5. Installation. Cabling first, while walls and ceilings are still open, then the screen, projector or TV, speakers, acoustic treatment, seating and control once the room is finished. We plan this around your builder's programme or your household.
  6. Calibration and handover. Picture and sound are set up for the room, and you get a proper introduction to the system rather than a manual.
  7. Aftercare. Nick Dunning, our technical services director, heads the in-house maintenance team that looks after the cinema from then on. Our Control4 programming carries a 12 month installation warranty, and Control4 equipment has a 2 year manufacturer's warranty.

The budget is settled at design stage, line by line, before anything is ordered. For a guide to what a small room costs and where the money goes, read our small cinema room cost guide.

Choosing a home cinema installer

Searching for home cinema installers near you will turn up everyone from TV-mounting firms to dedicated cinema designers. A few questions sort them quickly.

  • Can you see and hear their work first? The demonstration cinema in our Walton-on-Thames showroom runs a Sony 4K laser projector onto a 2.8 metre acoustically transparent screen, with Lyngdorf 7.2.2 sound and Kaleidescape film players. Bring a film you know well.
  • Will they draw the room before they sell you the kit? Ask for a layout, an equipment specification and 3D visuals, and expect the screen size to be worked out from where you sit, not from a brochure.
  • How will it be controlled? One remote or one app should run the projector, the sound, the lighting and the blinds. We are a Platinum Control4 dealer and won Control4's Circle of Excellence award three years running, from 2023 to 2025.
  • Who looks after it afterwards? Find out whether support comes from the people who built the room or from someone you have never met. Ours comes from our in-house maintenance team.
  • Will they work with your other trades? A cinema involves builders, electricians, architects and interior designers. There is a meeting room at the showroom for design presentations, and we run CPD sessions there for architects and interior designers.

From our Walton-on-Thames showroom we install cinemas throughout Surrey and in West and South-West London.

“Fantastic service from Andy and Adrian, who installed a cinema room and full Sonos sound integration throughout my home. I would definitely recommend them! Their communication and professionalism were excellent from start to finish, and the cinema room they created was outstanding.”

Questions

Home cinema: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

What is a home cinema?

A bespoke home cinema room is a dedicated space in your house that’s used to watch films, videos and animations. It can be used for other media experiences like gaming too.

What components do I need for a complete home cinema system installation?

You’ll need a big screen, a decent audio system, comfortable seating, adjustable lighting and perhaps a projector. Our home cinema specialists will be able to advise you on the best elements that suit your requirements.

Which home automation and home cinema brands do you work with?

We’re delighted to work with Fortress Seating for home cinemas and media rooms. We’ve also built strong, long term relationships with leading technology partners in the industry. We’re proud to be award-winning and Platinum approved Control 4 dealers. We also work with other high quality businesses in the industry including Lutron Lighting Controls, Rako Lighting Solutions, Sonance Sound Systems and Paradigm Audio.

How much does a home cinema room cost in the UK?

A professionally designed small cinema room typically costs between £15,000 and £25,000 fully installed. The main variables are the display, speaker package, acoustic treatment and seating. Larger rooms and reference-grade equipment go beyond that. Our small cinema room cost guide breaks the budget down line by line.

How long does a home cinema installation take?

A typical small room install takes two to three weeks on site once equipment arrives. Design, room planning and equipment lead times sit ahead of that, and we agree the programme with you before work starts.

How small can a cinema room be?

We have designed dedicated cinema rooms as small as 3 by 3.5 metres. Around 12 to 16 square metres with a ceiling height of 2.2 to 2.5 metres is a comfortable starting point for two rows of seating. If the room must stay a living space, a media room may suit you better, and our design service will tell you honestly which it should be.

Can I see and hear a cinema before I commit?

Yes. Our demonstration cinema at the Walton-on-Thames showroom is set up for exactly that. Book a private visit , bring a film you know well, and judge the picture and sound for yourself.

Will the cinema work for sport and gaming as well as films?

Yes. Most rooms we build are used for live sport as much as cinema. Control4 automation lets you switch between modes, one setting for a match, another for a film night, from a single remote or touchscreen.

Do you take over systems another company installed?

Yes. Our takeover and maintenance service covers systems we did not originally install: we document what is there, fix what is not working and support it going forward.

What is the difference between a home cinema room and a home theatre room?

None in practice: both mean a dedicated room for film, sport and gaming, with the screen, sound, seating and lighting designed together. If the room must also work as an everyday living space, a media room is usually the better fit.

Do you install home cinemas outside Surrey?

Yes. We are based in Walton-on-Thames and work across Surrey and West and South-West London, with London projects such as a basement cinema in Roehampton Gate and a hidden cinema in a West London period property.

Can you install a home cinema in an existing room?

Yes. Many of our cinemas began as something else. In Walton-on-Thames we renovated a tired media room the family already had, and in Oxshott we replaced an existing cinema that lacked the sound clarity and lighting control the owner wanted. We survey the room first, then design cable routes, speaker positions and acoustic treatment around what is already there.

Will you work with my architect or interior designer?

Yes, and the earlier the better. Cable routes, riser heights and acoustic allowances are easy to change on a drawing and costly to change after plastering. We can present the design to you and your designer together at our showroom, and on our Walton-on-Thames and Fetcham projects we worked alongside interior designer Fiona Brass.
