How a home automation installation works
Every home automation installation starts with a conversation, at your home or in our showroom, about how you live and what you want the house to do. We survey the property, plan the wired and Wi-Fi network the system depends on, and design the lighting, heating, audio, video, blinds and security as one system. You see 3D visuals of the design before you commit.
Installation is planned around your build programme or your household, and we work alongside your builder, architect or interior designer. New builds and renovations give the cleanest cable routes, but we also retrofit automation into finished homes and take over systems another installer left part-finished. At handover we give you a proper introduction to the system, and our maintenance team looks after it from then on.

What to look for in a smart home installer near you
Most people searching for smart home installers near them are really asking two things: who will build this well, and who will still answer the phone in five years. A few questions help you judge both.
- How far away are they, and how do they support you remotely? We are in Walton-on-Thames and have worked across Surrey and London since 2012. Control4's CORE controllers have OvrC Pro built in, which lets us monitor and troubleshoot devices remotely, so many faults can be resolved without a visit.
- Do they design the network first? Keypads, touchscreens, the app and most AV equipment run over your home network. A Control4 controller cannot even be set up without a wired Ethernet connection, so an installer who treats Wi-Fi as an afterthought is storing up problems.
- What works without the internet, and what needs a subscription? Control4 runs locally, so day-to-day control does not depend on a subscription; remote access, voice control and notifications come through its Connect service. A good installer explains this before you buy, not after handover.
- What do they ask you? The first meeting should be mostly about how you live: who gets up first, which rooms you use in the evening, what happens when you go away. The scene list grows from those answers.
- Can you see it working? A showroom visit tells you more than a brochure. Ours runs on the same Control4 platform we install.
What a smart home installation includes
A smart home installation is several systems designed as one, with a single controller and a single set of keypads and apps. Most of the homes we automate include some or all of these:
- The control system. Control4 sits at the centre, with a controller in the equipment rack and keypads, touchscreens, remotes and the app as the way in.
- Lighting and shading. Lighting control with scenes for each room, often on Lutron, with motorised blinds and curtains on the same keypads.
- The network. Wired data and Wi-Fi, planned so the access points cover the rooms you use and every TV, keypad and camera has a cable back to the rack.
- Security. CCTV, door entry, gates and locks, viewable on your phone, TV or touchscreen, with alerts when something happens.
- Audio and video. Multi-room AV for music and TV in the rooms, garden spaces and outbuildings you pick, with the equipment kept in one central place.
- Heating. Schedules and remote adjustment, alongside everything else.
Around those systems sits the work you do not see: the survey, cable routes agreed with your builder, the equipment rack, the programming of every scene, and an introduction at handover. You do not need all of it on day one. Plenty of clients start with a cinema room or a media room and extend the system later.
