What is the difference between a cinema room and a media room?

A cinema room is a dedicated space, built for one purpose, with controlled light, acoustic treatment and tiered seating. A media room is multi-use: a lounge, games room or basement that also delivers big-screen picture and immersive sound, usually around a large TV or a concealed projector. If the room needs to stay a living room, you want a media room. If you can give the room over to film, you want a dedicated cinema room.

Real rooms we have built

What goes in

Typically: an 85 inch or larger 4K screen or a concealed projector and screen; a discreet 5.1 or Atmos speaker package (in-wall and in-ceiling where the room should stay clean); a small equipment rack out of sight; Control4 so one remote runs everything; and lighting scenes that shift the room from family mode to film mode.

What it costs

Media rooms usually cost less than dedicated cinemas because the room itself needs less construction work.
