Multi-room audio designed and installed by Art of Integration

Sonos installer for Surrey and London homes

Sonos makes wireless speakers, soundbars and streaming amplifiers run from one app, plus in-ceiling, in-wall and outdoor speakers designed with Sonance. As a Sonos installer in Surrey and London, we build Sonos into walls and ceilings, set up the network it relies on, and link it to Control4 and Lutron so music joins your everyday scenes.

What a Sonos installer does that a shop cannot

Sonos is designed so anyone can put a speaker on a shelf and have it playing in minutes. The jobs that need an installer are the ones inside the fabric of the house: cutting speakers into ceilings and walls, finding a home for the amplifiers, running cable between floors and building a network that holds up when every room is playing at once.

For built-in audio, the current Sonos range is short and clear:

  • Sonos Amp: a two-channel streaming amplifier rated at 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms, with HDMI eARC for a TV, line-in, a subwoofer output and Ethernet. Sonos says one Amp can drive up to three pairs of its architectural speakers.
  • Amp Multi: an eight-channel, 2U amplifier built for professional installation, with outputs assignable to up to four zones and Wi-Fi 6.
  • In-Ceiling, In-Wall and Outdoor speakers by Sonos and Sonance: passive speakers designed and tuned with Sonance. The in-ceiling grilles are flush, bezel-less and paintable, and powering them from an Amp unlocks Trueplay tuning with a supported iPhone or iPad.

Why families choose Sonos ceiling speakers

The reason is usually the app. For many households Sonos is already on every phone, and children and guests know how to use it, so a house that works the same way in every room needs no explanation. Sonos ceiling speakers keep that familiar control while clearing speakers off the shelves, and an Amp gives each room the same streaming services, grouping and AirPlay 2 as a standalone Sonos speaker.

Sonos also lives happily alongside a cinema. A kitchen, garden room or gym can run on Sonos while a dedicated cinema uses its own processor and speakers, and Control4 ties the two together. For a whole-house plan that covers video as well as music, start with our multi-room AV service. This page is about getting Sonos itself right.

Planning Sonos: zones, network and a hardwired backbone

Sonos leans on the network more than any other part of a home system, so we design the two together.

  • Decide the zones first. Each Sonos Amp is one zone with up to three pairs of Sonos architectural speakers, and Amp Multi covers up to four zones from one rack unit. Listing the rooms that need their own music tells us how many amplifiers you need and where they live.
  • Cable the amplifiers. Sonos Amp and Amp Multi both have Ethernet, so we wire each one back to the network switch rather than leaving it on Wi-Fi.
  • Remove what Sonos does not support. Sonos lists wireless range extenders, Ethernet over Power adaptors, guest networks and routers that only offer 5GHz Wi-Fi as unsupported. If your current network relies on any of them, it needs reworking before new speakers go in.
  • Use a mesh the way Sonos expects. On a mesh network with a wired Sonos setup, Sonos says products must be wired to the primary mesh node, and the router must support Spanning Tree Protocol.
  • Pick wired or wireless, not both. Lutron's integration guidance says to use all wired or all wireless Sonos speakers when the system is linked to RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks QSX.
  • Give outbuildings their own network. A garden room, pool house or gym needs a cable or fibre run, as at Thames Ditton, not a stretched signal from the house.

Our data and Wi-Fi networks service and the Control4 network requirements guide cover the rest of the backbone.

Our work

Sonos in a Thames Ditton garden room

Our tech-enhanced garden room in Thames Ditton shows the part of a Sonos job most people never see. The building, an adult retreat with a bar, lounge and gym, stands more than 70 metres from the main house. We carried out external groundwork to run a dedicated fibre line from the house to a Ubiquiti network, which provides Wi-Fi throughout the building.

With that backbone in place, the lounge pairs a 65-inch LG OLED with a Sonos Arc soundbar for a relaxed social space, and the gym has a 48-inch LG OLED with a second Arc to keep workouts moving.

Clients in Chobham and Wimbledon Village have also asked us to upgrade both their Wi-Fi and their Sonos systems.

Integration

Sonos with Control4 and Lutron scenes

Control4's Sonos driver is a Works with Sonos integration. From the Control4 app and touchscreens you can choose Sonos favourites and playlists, group rooms, control playback and volume, and search streaming services or recently played music. On the lighting side, Lutron RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX can include a Sonos favourite in a lighting scene, and a Lutron Pico audio remote controls one Sonos room at a time. Some of the behaviours this allows:

  • Morning: kitchen ceiling speakers start a news station at low volume as the shades open.
  • Garden: a keypad by the back door groups the terrace with the kitchen and plays the family playlist.
  • Away: setting the house to away stops every Sonos room along with the lights.
  • Film: starting a film in the media room pauses music in the rooms next door.

Our Control4 installation page and the guide to Lutron keypads show how these buttons are planned.

Already own Sonos?

Already have Sonos? We can help

When Sonos rooms drop out or vanish from the app, we start by checking the network against Sonos's own requirements, then the speakers. We can move an existing system onto a properly wired network, add an Amp and architectural speakers to rooms that only have portable speakers, bring Sonos into Control4 or Lutron so it joins your scenes, and relocate speakers when you renovate or move. We can also tidy an older system that mixes generations of Sonos products, checking that each one still works with the current Sonos app, through our takeover and maintenance service.

A Sonos soundbar or Sonos architectural speakers?

At Thames Ditton we used Sonos Arc soundbars, which suit a lounge or gym where one bar near the screen is acceptable and simplicity matters most. Architectural speakers driven by a Sonos Amp suit rooms where nothing should be on show, and because the Amp has HDMI eARC, in-wall speakers can play TV sound as well as music. For a room that is mainly about films, a dedicated system with its own processor goes much further; our media rooms page explains that step up.

Questions

Sonos: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Do I need an installer for Sonos ceiling speakers?

In practice, yes. Sonos sells its in-ceiling and in-wall speakers as passive models that need an amplifier, ideally a Sonos Amp, and they must be cut into the ceiling and cabled back to wherever the amplifier lives. Sonos describes Amp Multi as built for professional installation. An installer also checks the network, which decides how reliable the system will be.

How many ceiling speakers can one Sonos Amp power?

Sonos says one Amp can power up to three pairs of Sonos architectural speakers, adjusting itself automatically for them. All of those speakers play the same music as one zone. If you want separate music in several rooms, you need an Amp per zone or an Amp Multi, which has eight outputs that can be assigned to up to four zones.

Does Sonos work with Control4?

Yes. Control4's Sonos driver is a Works with Sonos integration that controls any Sonos device on the network. From Control4 you can play favourites and playlists, group rooms, adjust playback and volume, and search streaming services. That lets Sonos be part of scenes, so one button can set the lights and start music in the right rooms.

Why does my Sonos keep dropping out?

Start with the network. Sonos lists setups it does not support, including wireless range extenders, Ethernet over Power adaptors, guest networks and routers that offer only 5GHz Wi-Fi. Wired setups also need a router that supports Spanning Tree Protocol, and on a mesh the wired product must connect to the main node. We test against these requirements before touching the speakers.

Can Sonos be controlled from Lutron keypads?

Yes, with Lutron RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX. Once Sonos favourites are set up in the Sonos app, a favourite can be added to a Lutron scene such as Morning, and a Lutron Pico audio remote can control one Sonos room. Lutron advises using all wired or all wireless Sonos speakers in an integrated system.

Can Sonos in-ceiling speakers play TV sound?

Yes, through a Sonos Amp. The Amp connects to the TV's HDMI eARC or ARC port, and Sonos offers an optical adapter for older TVs. It also has a subwoofer output for deeper bass. That works well for everyday viewing in a kitchen or family room, while a dedicated cinema is better served by a separate processor and speakers.
