Architectural audio designed and installed by Art of Integration

Sonance speakers designed and installed in Surrey and London homes

Sonance is a Californian maker of architectural loudspeakers, founded in 1983, whose range runs from in-wall and in-ceiling models to Invisible Series speakers that are finished over with the surrounding wall. We design and install Sonance speakers for houses in Surrey and London, and Sonance invisible audio is playing in our Walton-on-Thames showroom.

What are Sonance invisible speakers?

Sonance began in 1983 in San Clemente, California, when its two founders introduced what the company calls the first in-wall loudspeaker. More than forty years later it still builds speakers to live inside the house rather than on a shelf, and that single idea runs through every range it makes.

Indoors, the current residential line-up has three families:

  • Invisible Series: flat panels set flush into the wall or ceiling and then finished over, so no grille shows at all. Sonance lists drywall, select plasters, wallpaper, leather and wood veneer as compatible finishes and quotes roughly 180 degrees of dispersion, which helps one panel cover a wide room.
  • Visual Experience Series: in-wall and in-ceiling speakers with grilles, including a painted grille option and a laser-printed grille for wood ceilings.
  • Small Aperture Series: compact round openings for ceilings where a standard speaker would look oversized next to the downlights.

Outside, Sonance makes Landscape, Garden and Patio Series speakers. Its Landscape Solutions system stakes small satellites into the planting, finished to look like garden lighting, with a partly buried subwoofer for the bass.

Why architects and designers specify Sonance

Most speaker brands offer concealment as an extra. For Sonance it is the starting point, which is why the name comes up so often on projects led by an architect or interior designer. A finished-over Invisible Series panel leaves an unbroken ceiling, and that matters in a room with fine cornicing, a polished plaster wall or a hand-painted ceiling, where a row of white grilles would undo expensive work.

The trade-off is that invisible speakers are a building decision, not a shopping one. They go in before the final skim and are decorated with the wall, so they suit renovations and new builds far better than a finished room. Where the plaster is already done, the Small Aperture and Visual Experience ranges give a smaller, paintable grille instead. A sensible plan often mixes the two: invisible panels in the formal rooms, grilled speakers in kitchens and bathrooms where surfaces get cleaned hard. Lighting raises the same conservation questions in older houses, which we explore in our listed and period homes guide.

Planning invisible speakers: positions, plaster and timing

Invisible speakers reward early planning more than any other audio product, because once the wall is decorated there is no grille to lift off.

  • Fix positions at first fix. We mark speaker locations on the drawings with the lighting layout, so a panel never ends up behind a picture light, a curtain track or a joist.
  • Agree the finish with the plasterer. Sonance names select plasters, wallpaper, leather and veneer as compatible, and its DISC system measures the finish over each panel. Keeping that layer even across a room keeps every speaker sounding alike, so our engineer and the plasterer check it together before decoration starts.
  • Protect the panels through the messy trades. They go in before the final skim, are covered while sanding and painting happen, and are commissioned once the room is dry.
  • Keep the electronics reachable. The speakers are fixed for the life of the decoration, so all adjustment happens at the amplifier. We label every cable run and photograph each position before the wall is closed.
  • Choose the right room. Invisible panels shine in living spaces and for music. A dedicated cinema usually suits grilled in-wall speakers behind the screen plus in-ceiling heights, as at Fetcham, which our home cinema design team plans separately.
Our work

Sonance in our projects and showroom

In a custom-built cinema with a pool table and bar in Fetcham, Sonance supplied the whole speaker system. The case study lists Sonance VP in-wall speakers behind the acoustically transparent screen for the front channels, Sonance in-wall surrounds, Sonance in-ceiling speakers for the Dolby Atmos height channels and a Sonance in-wall subwoofer, run from an Anthem receiver under Control4. Every speaker on that list is built into a wall or the ceiling.

Sonance works beyond the home too. For a bar and rooftop terrace in Canary Wharf, we designed and delivered Sonance commercial audio, indoor and outdoor-rated, alongside Rako lighting scenes for day, sunset and night. That project sits in our commercial AV work, but covering an exposed terrace evenly is the same problem a private garden or pool terrace presents, which our outdoor AV service handles.

To hear Sonance invisible audio before you commit, book a visit to our home cinema showroom in Walton-on-Thames. Standing in front of a plain wall that is playing music is the quickest way to decide whether the approach suits your house.

Integration

Sonance with Control4 and Lutron

Sonance's in-wall and in-ceiling speakers are driven by a separate amplifier, and Sonance makes its own digital and DSP amplifiers for the job. That means control sits with the amplifier and the music source in the equipment rack, not with the speaker. We wire each room back to the rack and let Control4 decide what plays where and how loudly, with Lutron handling the light. A few behaviours this makes possible:

  • Reception: as guests arrive, the hall and drawing room lights rise to an evening level and quiet music plays from panels nobody can see, so the sound seems to belong to the room itself.
  • Dinner: one button dims the dining room and plays a chosen playlist through the invisible panels at background level, with a volume cap so conversation is never drowned out.
  • Quiet hours: late in the evening, keypads in the bedroom wing hold every zone below a set level, however high someone turns the app.

For more ways to tie music to the rest of the house, see everyday Control4 automations.

Already own Sonance?

Already have Sonance speakers? We can help

If your house already has Sonance in the walls or ceilings, perhaps fitted by a previous installer or the developer, we can trace and test the existing cabling, replace a tired amplifier or streamer, rebalance levels room by room and bring the speakers under Control4 or Lutron so they follow your lighting scenes. During a renovation we can advise which speakers can be reused, and where new invisible panels can be added to match the old ones. Our takeover and maintenance service covers systems we did not originally install.

Sonance or Sonos architectural speakers?

The two names often appear together because Sonance designed the in-ceiling, in-wall and outdoor speakers that Sonos sells as its architectural range. Those are passive speakers made to pair with a Sonos Amp, a good answer when you want a handful of rooms on the Sonos app. Sonance's own ranges go further: finished-over Invisible Series panels, small-aperture ceilings, landscape systems and 70V and 100V versions for long cable runs, all driven from dedicated amplifiers and controlled through Control4. If the Sonos route appeals, see our Sonos page.

Questions

Sonance: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Can Sonance speakers really be plastered over?

Yes, that is the purpose of the Invisible Series. The panels sit flush with the wall or ceiling and are finished with the same surface as the rest of the room. Sonance lists drywall, select plasters, wallpaper, leather and wood veneer as compatible, and uses its DISC system to measure the finish over each speaker. Because they go in before decoration, they suit renovations and new builds.

Are Sonance in-ceiling speakers good for Dolby Atmos?

They can be. In our Fetcham cinema the Dolby Atmos height channels come from Sonance in-ceiling speakers, with Sonance in-wall speakers behind the screen and for the surrounds. For a dedicated cinema we would normally pick grilled in-ceiling models rather than invisible panels, because aiming and exact position matter more in a cinema than in a living room.

What are Sonance outdoor speakers?

Sonance makes several outdoor families, including the Landscape, Garden and Patio Series and Mariner surface-mount speakers. Its Landscape Solutions system uses staked satellites that resemble garden lighting, placed 8 to 10 feet apart, with a partly buried subwoofer for bass, all wired from a two-channel amplifier. The system comes as four or eight satellites with a subwoofer, or built to order for larger gardens.

Is Sonos made by Sonance?

No, they are separate companies. Sonance designed and tuned the in-ceiling, in-wall and outdoor speakers that Sonos sells for use with its Amp, which is why you see both names on them. Sonance also makes its own, wider ranges, including the Invisible Series. We install both, and the right choice depends on how you want to control music around the house.

Can Sonance speakers be controlled with Control4?

Yes, through the amplifier and music source they are wired to. Control4 runs the source, the amplifier and the volume for each room, and can tie music into lighting and shading scenes. We programme it so a single keypad button or the Control4 app starts music in the right rooms at a sensible level, and stops it everywhere when you leave.

Where can I hear Sonance speakers in Surrey?

Our Walton-on-Thames showroom has Sonance invisible audio next to a working Control4 system, a few steps from a demonstration cinema built around a Sony laser projector and Lyngdorf Audio. Visits are by appointment, and hearing music come from a plain wall is the easiest way to judge whether invisible speakers suit your home.
