Home cinema recliners are powered seats built to keep you comfortable through a long film, put your eyes at the right height for the screen and recline at the touch of a button. The three makers we use come from very different places: Moovia from Germany, Front Row from Kent and Fortress from California. Each has real strengths and limits.

This article looks at the companies themselves and what living with their seats is like. For how we plan rows, risers and power around them, see our cinema seating page.
Where do Moovia, Front Row and Fortress come from?
Moovia did not start with chairs. It was founded in 2003 in Nagold, in south-west Germany, as a small supplier of projection screens and cinema accessories, and moved into seating as customers asked for it. Today it trades as VISIVO GmbH & Co. KG from Eutingen im Gäu, and its chairs are built in Germany and elsewhere in Europe (Moovia, About).
Front Row is the youngest business of the three on paper. The company behind it, FrontRow Seating Limited of Tunbridge Wells, was incorporated at Companies House on 13 May 2020, although FrontRow seats were already on sale in the UK when Home Cinema Choice wrote about them in 2014.
Fortress has the longest story. According to its company history, it started trading in Los Angeles in the late 1930s with steel shelving and lockers, moved into desks and office seating after the war, and turned to seating alone after a fire destroyed its Irwindale factory in 1979. It also made recliners for dialysis and chemotherapy units, changed hands in 1992 and built its first home cinema chair in 1999, when a home theatre company commissioned one.

What is each maker known for?
Moovia is known for saying yes. Beyond the usual adjustable headrests and footrests, its options list, checked on 14 October 2026, includes three-zone lumbar support, massage, cupholders finished in 22 carat gold or antiqued copper, buttons set with Swarovski crystals and carbon fibre trim (Moovia home theatre seating). Its seats also talk to control systems, which neither of the other two makers here lists.
Front Row is known for practical, modular rows and for looking after them. Its site, checked on 14 October 2026, offers a five-year insurance-backed warranty on domestic installations covering the frame, the mechanics and the covers, including accidental damage such as rips and stains, and it delivers through a two-person team that installs the seats in the room (FrontRow Seating).
Fortress is known for building to order, with 41 chair models on its home theatre seating page when we checked on 14 October 2026, and for its medical and commercial seating background. That heritage shows in the engineering, such as an optional motorised system that raises a whole row of seats by up to 8 inches (Fortress specifications, checked 14 October 2026).
What is it like to live with powered recliners?
Mostly it is about how the room gets used. In our Roehampton Gate basement cinema, a couple and their five children share bespoke Moovia seating in a soft neutral fabric, laid out so the family can sprawl without losing sight of the screen. In Oxshott, six Front Row leather recliners with two motors each sit in two rows under a sloped ceiling, and the same room switches between film nights and Chelsea matches with the grandchildren.
What owners notice day to day is less glamorous. Every powered seat needs mains power, so its cables have to be designed in rather than trailed across the carpet. A reclined seat takes far more floor space than an upright one. And the comfort you choose in a showroom is the comfort you live with for years, so it is worth sitting through a whole scene before deciding. As Home Cinema Choice pointed out, motorised control and custom finishes both push the cost up, which means every option deserves a second look.

What are the pros and cons of each maker?
Here is our honest summary, based on the makers’ own websites and published coverage, all checked on 14 October 2026.
| Maker | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Moovia | The longest options list of the three, from heating, cooling and massage to luxury trims. Native integration with Control4, Savant and RTI, and a driver for Crestron. | Every option adds cost and complexity, as Home Cinema Choice notes of motorised and custom seats generally. Its chairs are made in “Germany and Europe”, not only in Germany. Its website doesn’t publish warranty terms or lead times. |
| Front Row | A UK company in Kent, with modular ranges, dual motors on its Serenity seats (checked 14 October 2026) and a five-year insurance-backed warranty for homes. | Its website doesn’t say where the seats are made. No control-system integration is listed, so recline stays on each seat. The warranty covers domestic installations only. |
| Fortress | Over eight decades in business, every chair built to order, a large model range and a motorised option to lift a whole row. | An American maker that specifies its seats in inches and doesn’t give lead times or its current factory location on the pages we checked. Its home page claims over seven decades of experience, while its history page dates the business to the late 1930s. |
Who does each one suit?
Moovia suits the client who wants the seat to be part of the room’s technology: heating on a winter evening, cupholder lighting that follows the film scene, and a finish chosen to match the interior. It suits less well if you want a simple chair and no decisions.
Front Row suits families who want a well-supported UK company and straightforward modular rows, including corner and curved layouts in media rooms that double as lounges. It is less suited to anyone who wants the seats wired into a control system.
Fortress suits a dedicated cinema with a classic look, especially where a client wants a particular style built to order. It suits less well when the timetable is tight or when you want to see and sit in the exact model in the UK before ordering. Whichever way you lean, our home cinema design and installation service plans the seats together with the screen and sound.
How do they fit a Control4 and Lutron home?
Moovia is the only one of the three with published control-system integration. Its integration page lists native drivers for Control4, Savant and RTI, plus its own app for iOS and Android, and the functions it exposes include recline, footrest, headrest, lumbar, massage, heating and cooling and cupholder lighting. With that link, a Control4 Film scene can dim the Lutron lighting and bring up the cupholder lights together, while each person still sets their own recline. Roehampton Gate, for example, pairs Control4 automation with a Lutron lighting system.
With Front Row and Fortress, the recline buttons stay on the seat and the system handles everything around it: lights, screen, sound and blinds. That is how Oxshott works, with distinct Control4 modes for film and sport. If you want to try different seats before choosing, our Walton-on-Thames showroom has cinema seating to test, by appointment.

Frequently asked questions
How long has Fortress made home cinema seats?
Since 1999, according to Fortress’s own history page, when a home theatre company commissioned its first home cinema chair. The company itself is much older: it began trading in Los Angeles in the late 1930s and has been a California corporation since 1957, making office, commercial and medical seating before home cinemas.
What warranty do Front Row cinema seats have?
Front Row’s website, checked on 14 October 2026, describes a five-year insurance-backed warranty for domestic installations. It covers the frame, the mechanics and the fabric or leather, including accidental damage such as rips, tears and stains. The full terms are in a separate document, which is worth reading before you order.
Did Moovia always make cinema chairs?
No. Moovia began in 2003 in Nagold, Germany, as a small supplier of projection screens and personalised cinema accessories. It moved into seating as customers asked for it, and seating is now what it is known for. The company is based today in Eutingen im Gäu.
Can home cinema recliners have heating and massage?
Some can. Moovia lists massage, heating and cooling among the seat functions it can control, alongside lumbar support and cupholder lighting, and those functions can be linked to Control4. Check each maker’s current options when you specify, because the features vary by model and by maker.
