Luxury home cinema seating: Moovia, Front Row and Fortress

Moovia, Front Row and Fortress make reclining cinema seats: Moovia is German, Front Row is based in Kent and Fortress is American. We plan cinema rooms around them across Surrey and London, setting out rows, risers and finishes and installing the power and control, as with Moovia seating at Roehampton Gate and Front Row recliners in Oxshott.

What sets cinema seating apart from a sofa?

A cinema seat has to do three things a sofa does not: hold you comfortably through a three-hour film, put your eyes and ears in the right place for the screen and speakers, and move quietly at the touch of a button. Head height, recline angle and seat depth all affect what you see over the row in front and how sound reaches you, so in a dedicated room the seating is part of the technical design of a luxury home cinema, not furniture chosen at the end.

This page covers three of the seating makers we use. Moovia is a German company that began in Nagold in 2003 and makes its chairs in Germany and Europe. FrontRow Seating Ltd is based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Fortress started trading in Los Angeles in the late 1930s and has built home cinema seating since 1999.

Moovia, Front Row or Fortress: how the three makers differ

Moovia offers the most personal specification of the three. Collections such as Milano, Stockholm and Chesterfield can be ordered in Italian leather, fabric or faux leather, with armrests shortened or extended, and the seats offer adjustable headrests and footrests, lumbar support, heating and cooling, massage and lit cupholders. Moovia also offers native Control4 integration.

Front Row is built around modular ranges. Its Serenity seats use two motors, one for the recline and one for the headrest, and can be linked in straight or curved rows. The Modern and Luno ranges include corner configurations, and many Front Row models have cupholders and USB charging points.

Fortress builds each chair to order across more than 40 models, among them Bijou, Matinee and Palladium. Seat widths run from 20 to 26 inches, with custom sizes available, and an optional motorised system can raise an entire row by up to 8 inches.

Rows, risers, sightlines and recline clearance

Seating is planned backwards from the screen. The front row sits at the distance that gives the right viewing angle for the screen size, and every row behind it needs enough height to see over the heads in front. That usually means a riser, whose height depends on row spacing, screen height and the head height of the chosen seat when reclined. Our home cinema room layout guide explains the geometry.

Recline changes the footprint. A seat that looks compact upright can need far more depth fully reclined, so we space rows for the reclined position plus a walkway behind. Wall clearance varies by design: Fortress's specification sheet, for example, shows a chair needing only 5 inches from the back wall at full recline. In basements with limited head height, a riser can eat into the ceiling space needed for Atmos speakers or a projector, which is why we settle the seating before the ceiling design, as our basement cinema guide describes.

Our work

Moovia at Roehampton Gate, Front Row in Oxshott

The Roehampton Gate basement cinema is a 7 by 8 metre room for a couple and their five children. The homeowners chose bespoke Moovia cinema seating in a soft neutral fabric, laid out for relaxed family use while keeping clean sightlines to the screen, which shows a 4K image from a JVC laser projector. Fabric-wrapped wall panels hide the speakers and acoustic treatment, and the four subwoofers of the 9.4 Dolby Atmos system were tuned so the bass is even whether you sit in the front row or the back.

In Oxshott, six Front Row leather recliners with dual motors sit in two rows facing a 120 inch acoustically transparent screen, with a KEF 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos system behind and around it. The room has a sloped ceiling, which shaped the projector position and speaker geometry, and Control4 modes switch it between film nights and match days.

We also specify Fortress Seating for cinemas and media rooms. You can try cinema seating for comfort at our Walton-on-Thames showroom, by appointment, before you choose.

Power recline, cable routing and Control4

Powered seats need mains power at every seat or linked group, and the cables have to reach them without crossing the floor. We plan floor boxes, or a riser with a cable void, before the screed or carpet goes down, and we position sockets so a reclining seat cannot pull its own lead out as it moves. On a riser, the same void carries speaker and data cable to the back row.

Moovia seats can join the control system directly. Moovia provides native integration for Control4, Savant and RTI, a driver for Crestron and its own app for iOS and Android, so a Control4 Film scene can dim the room lights and bring up the cupholder lighting while each person sets their own recline. With Front Row and Fortress seats, recline stays on each seat's own controls and the room scene handles the lights, screen and sound around them.

Already own Cinema seating?

Already have Moovia, Front Row or Fortress seats?

If you already own cinema seats, we can help them work better in the room. That might mean replanning the layout or adding a riser when the cinema is upgraded, moving the seats to a new room and re-running their power, tidying cables that cross the floor, or connecting Moovia seats to a new Control4 system so they respond to scenes. If the screen or speakers are changing, we check that the existing rows still give every seat a clear view and good sound. For faults with a seat's motor, mechanism or upholstery, the manufacturer is the right contact, and we will help you reach them.

Leather or fabric for cinema seats?

Leather wipes clean and suits a family room with drinks and snacks; the Front Row seats in Oxshott are leather. Fabric feels softer and warmer in a cool basement, and it absorbs some sound, which helps in a hard-surfaced room; the Moovia seats at Roehampton Gate are fabric. A room full of upholstered seats and people sounds different from an empty one, so we design the room treatment with the seating in place, as our guide to acoustic treatment and soundproofing explains. Colour matters too: darker finishes reflect less light back towards the screen.

Questions

Cinema seating: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Where is Moovia seating made?

Moovia is a German company. It began in Nagold in 2003, is now based in Eutingen im Gäu, and says it makes its chairs in Germany and Europe. Its seats can be specified in Italian leather, fabric or faux leather, with options such as adjustable headrests, lumbar support, heating, cooling and massage. We installed bespoke Moovia seating in our Roehampton Gate basement cinema.

Is Front Row cinema seating a British company?

Yes. FrontRow Seating Ltd is based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Its ranges include Serenity, Modern, Harmony, Luno and Contour. Serenity seats have dual motors, so the recline and the headrest move separately, and they can be linked in straight or curved rows. Our Oxshott cinema has six Front Row leather dual-motor recliners in two rows.

How much space do home cinema recliners need?

More than they look when upright. Plan each row for the seat's fully reclined depth plus a walkway behind it, and check the wall clearance for the back row. Some designs need very little: Fortress's specification sheet shows a chair needing only 5 inches from the back wall at full recline. We set this out on the room drawings before choosing the screen size or building a riser.

Can Moovia seats be controlled by Control4?

Yes. Moovia provides native integration for Control4, Savant and RTI, a driver for Crestron and its own app. That means seat functions and cupholder lighting can sit alongside the lights, screen and sound in a Control4 scene. We usually leave the recline to each person and use the scene for the room around them.

Can I try luxury cinema seating before I buy?

Yes. Our demonstration cinema in Walton-on-Thames has cinema seating you can test for comfort, alongside a Sony 4K laser projector, a 2.8 metre acoustically transparent screen and a Lyngdorf Audio 7.2.2 system. Visits are by appointment. Sitting in a seat for a whole film scene tells you far more about recline, headrest height and firmness than a brochure.

Do I need a riser for a second row of cinema seats?

Usually, yes. Without a riser, people in the back row look at the heads in front rather than the bottom of the screen. The riser height depends on row spacing, screen height and the seat's head height in recline. It also gives a void for power and speaker cables. In low basements we balance riser height against the ceiling space needed for speakers and projection.
