Silent Gliss motorised curtain tracks and QMotion blinds in Surrey and London

Silent Gliss is a curtain track and blind maker headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, whose range includes electric curtain tracks and motorised dim-out blinds. QMotion makes battery-powered and wired motorised blinds. We specify and install both in media rooms and family homes across Surrey and London, and connect them to Control4 so blinds follow the lighting.

What Silent Gliss and QMotion each make

These two brands answer the same question, how to control daylight in a room, in different ways, so we cover them together. For motorised shading in general, including other systems, see our motorised blinds and shading service.

Silent Gliss has its group headquarters in Bern, Switzerland, and has been developing smooth, quiet curtain and blind systems since 1952. Its range covers hand-drawn and electric curtain tracks, the Metropole curtain pole, roller and dim-out blinds, Roman, pleated, vertical and panel systems, and its own fabrics, including dim-out and blackout cloths. The electric curtain tracks come in two families, the SG 5100 and the larger SG 5600, which Silent Gliss lists for longer, heavier curtains.

QMotion makes motorised roller blinds with a counterbalance spring in the roller: the spring does most of the lifting and the motor only has to guide it, which is how a battery can run a big blind. Its battery-operated blinds are fully wireless, with a battery life of up to three years, and its wired QIS system runs over Cat 6 cable for new builds. QMotion blinds also have a manual override, so they can be moved by hand.

Why they suit cinema rooms, media rooms and retrofits

A media room asks two things of its windows: darkness when the film starts, and quiet while the blinds move. Silent Gliss presents its motorised systems as a benchmark for quiet and smooth running, and QMotion calls its blinds virtually silent. Those are the makers' own claims, so we still listen to a motor in a quiet room before we commit to it.

For darkness, Silent Gliss dim-out blinds have the fabric zipped into side channels, so the edges are held in a profile instead of hanging free, and they can be fitted inside or outside the window recess. QMotion offers blackout fabrics across several collections. In a dedicated home cinema we still check the top, the sides and the sill of every window, because a thin line of daylight on a projection screen is easy to see.

Retrofits are where battery blinds earn their place. A QMotion battery blind needs no new cable to the window, which matters once plaster and decoration are finished. Silent Gliss also makes battery roller and Roman blinds for the same situation, while its electric tracks and blinds suit renovations where power can be run to the head of the window.

Planning Silent Gliss and QMotion: power, weight and fabric

  • Power first: Silent Gliss electric tracks and blinds, and QMotion QIS blinds, need cable to the window head, so they belong in the first-fix plan. Battery blinds from either brand suit rooms where that cable cannot be added.
  • Battery access: QMotion rates its batteries for up to three years, so we make sure every headrail can be reached without taking down joinery or pelmets.
  • Size and weight: Silent Gliss points its electric tracks at curtains that are big, weighty or out of reach, and the fabric weight and the length of the run decide between the SG 5100 and SG 5600 families.
  • Control route: for Control4, Silent Gliss needs Smart motors and a gateway, and QMotion needs the Zigbee or wired version, so we fix the control route before the order is placed.
  • Fabric: blackout for cinema rooms and bedrooms, sheer or dim-out for living spaces, and layered curtains over blinds where a room needs both.
Our work

Silent Gliss in Walton-on-Thames and QMotion in Epsom

In our Walton-on-Thames media room renovation, we turned a media room the owners were unhappy with into a family room built around a Sony 4K laser projector and a Paradigm 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos system, with the front speakers hidden behind an acoustically transparent screen and the surrounds in the ceiling. Window treatments are Silent Gliss blackout blinds, with Lutron HomeWorks lighting, and Control4 brings the AV, lighting and temperature onto a single remote and app in place of the separate handsets the room had before.

In the Epsom media room and sports bar, built for a family who wanted one room for football, films and gaming, we fitted QMotion automated blackout blinds alongside an 85-inch Sony TV, an Anthem receiver running 5.1 sound, Lutron RA2 lighting and Control4. The blackout blinds give the family full control of daylight, and they can be adjusted from the same control pad that sets the brightness and colour of the LED lighting and runs the AV.

How the blinds work with Control4 and the rest of the room

Both brands can be run from Control4, by different routes. Silent Gliss Smart motors connect to home control systems through a gateway, and Silent Gliss lists drivers for Control4, Crestron, KNX, Savant and Rako among others. QMotion blinds communicate over Zigbee or, on the wired QIS system, over RS485, and Control4's own driver database lists QMotion roller blind drivers for both the Zigbee battery version and the wired version.

Once connected, the blinds become part of the room's scenes. In a media room, Film can close the blackout blinds as the lights fade and the screen comes on; Match can lower them partway so the bar stays bright; Morning can open the bedroom curtains at a set time. Our Control4 smart home installation page explains how those scenes reach keypads, remotes and the app. Where a house runs Rako lighting without a wider automation system, Rako lists both Silent Gliss and QMotion (through its Q-Hub) among its integrations, so lights and blinds can share a keypad.

Already own Silent Gliss and QMotion?

Already have Silent Gliss or QMotion blinds?

We help owners who already have either brand, including when the original installer is no longer around. Typical jobs include:

  • linking existing Silent Gliss Smart motors or QMotion blinds to Control4 or Rako;
  • resetting scenes, timings and stop positions so blinds end up where you want them;
  • troubleshooting QMotion blinds that lose their connection to Control4. QMotion's motor firmware 2.1.23 addressed reconnection after power cuts or long idle periods, and on Composer 3.3.2 or later the update is pushed automatically;
  • planning battery changes and replacing handsets or wall controls;
  • moving blinds to a new room, or adding motorised windows to an existing scheme.

Motor faults and fabric damage go back through the manufacturer's own channels; we diagnose the problem and tell you which route applies. If the blinds were fitted by another company, we can look after them under our takeover and maintenance service.

Silent Gliss or QMotion?

Choose Silent Gliss when curtains are part of the interior design: long or heavy curtains on electric tracks, the Metropole pole, or dim-out blinds held in side channels. Choose QMotion when a room needs motorised blinds without new wiring, or when you want to be able to move a blind by hand. One house can use both, with battery blinds in finished rooms and electric tracks in the rooms being rebuilt. If you would rather have lighting and shading from one manufacturer, Lutron's own shades are the other route, covered on our Lutron lighting control page.

Questions

Silent Gliss and QMotion: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Can Silent Gliss curtain tracks be motorised?

Yes. Silent Gliss makes electric curtain tracks in two families, the SG 5100 and the larger SG 5600, and suggests them wherever curtains are big, weighty or out of reach. They can be run from a switch, a remote control, the Silent Gliss Move app or a home control system such as Control4. Electric tracks need a power supply at the window, so they are easiest to plan during a renovation.

Do QMotion blinds need wiring?

Not the battery versions. QMotion battery-operated blinds are fully wireless, with batteries rated for up to three years, because a spring in the roller takes most of the weight off the motor. For new builds QMotion also offers a wired QIS system, which runs over Cat 6 cable and supplies 24V power to the blinds, so you can choose wired or battery depending on the room.

Do QMotion blinds work with Control4?

Yes. Control4's driver database lists QMotion roller blind drivers for both the Zigbee battery version and the wired version. QMotion has also released motor firmware (2.1.23) that improved reconnection with Control4 after power cuts or long idle periods, which Control4 pushes automatically on Composer 3.3.2 or later. We set up the blinds, the drivers and the scenes together.

Can Silent Gliss motorised blinds be controlled by a smart home system?

Yes, with Silent Gliss Smart motors. They connect to home control systems through a gateway, and Silent Gliss lists drivers for Control4, Crestron, KNX, Savant, Rako and several other systems, with more on request. Its own Move hub and app can also group rooms, run scenes and schedules, and report blind and curtain positions back to the app.

Are QMotion blinds available in the UK?

Yes. QMotion EMEA runs a UK website offering battery-operated and wired motorised blinds, with fabrics in blackout, translucent and sheer opacities. We specify them for homes in Surrey and London, in battery or wired form depending on the room, and connect them to Control4 or Rako so they work alongside the lighting.

Will Silent Gliss or QMotion blackout blinds make a cinema room dark?

They get close, but the details decide it. Silent Gliss dim-out blinds hold the fabric in side channels and can be fitted inside or outside the recess, and both brands offer blackout fabrics. Light can still creep in at the top or sill of a window, so we check every edge and, where needed, combine blinds with curtains to stop daylight reaching the screen.
