Smart home lighting puts you in control of your lighting. Customise the look and feel of your room in an instant, from your home or your phone. We all look better with the right lighting, and the same goes for your beautiful home.

Our lighting installations mean that you decide how much light and shade you have in a room at any one time. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer. We take the time to truly understand what you want and need before designing your ideal lighting and shading solutions in your home.

Highlight your favourite interior design features, create the right mood and optimise wellbeing with intelligent lighting. Create a cosy feel for movie night, an energy-boosting vibe in the gym, or ramp up the party feel for a social gathering. All of this, and so much more, is possible at the touch of a button with modern smart lighting control systems.

How does a smart home lighting system work?

We’ll try to avoid going into the nitty gritty, tech geek talk on a step-by-step lighting set-up here.

A smart lighting system connects smart lighting to an app on a smart device via bluetooth or wifi connection. Your network of smart lighting fixtures can all be controlled from a single point.

Simply tap a keypad in your home, an app on your smart phone or tablet, or give a voice command to a smart speaker like Amazon Alexa, Amazon Echo or Google Home. It’s as easy as saying, “Alexa, turn on kitchen ceiling light,”, and it happens.

That means you can control all of your lighting, and your shades, from a single point - wherever you are in the world.

Motorised blinds and curtains

Blinds and curtains can share the same keypads and scenes as your lighting. We cover them in detail on our motorised blinds and curtains page.

What a lighting control system does

Whether you call it lighting control or a smart lighting system, it takes the decisions out of individual switches and puts them into one designed system. Instead of a row of rockers that each work a single circuit, a keypad by the door sets several circuits at once, to levels chosen for that moment. Press Dinner and the pendants drop, the wall lights come up softly and the kitchen downlights fade to a glow; press Off on the way out and the whole floor follows.

Behind the keypad sit three parts. Dimmer modules do the switching and dimming, either grouped in a central rack or placed near the fittings they control. Keypads and touchscreens send the commands, engraved so each button says what it does. A processor or hub holds the programming: the scenes, the timers and settings that follow dawn and dusk through the year. Connect that to motorised blinds and a wider smart home system, and the same keypad can close the curtains and start the music.

We install three main platforms. Lutron lighting control runs from whole-home HomeWorks to wireless RadioRA 3, and Lutron makes its own blinds too. Rako is made in the UK and offers wireless, wired or combined systems in one product family, which suits sensitive retrofits. Control4 has its own lighting control as well, which runs the film and sport scenes in our Oxshott and Weybridge cinemas, and Lutron and Rako can both link to Control4. Which one fits depends on the house, how much new cable it can take and whether you want lighting and shading from one maker. Our guide to planning lighting scenes shows how we build the scene list room by room.

Benefits

What are the benefits of installing a lighting automation system in a home?

Home security

Control4’s smart home technology simulates occupancy by setting timers when you’re away. Your lights go on and off, your shades open and close, at key times so it seems like you’re at home. Pair this with more smart security systems like CCTV and motion sensors.

Convenience

You can curate your lighting systems from wherever you are. Intelligent lighting’s controlled from your smart device or a keypad at home. You have simple, effective lighting controls in the palm of your hand.

Mood enhancing

Create your ideal ambiance for any occasion. Whether it’s dimming for a romantic meal, setting a relaxing lighting scene after a stressful day, or lifting the energy for a party: mood lighting’s made easy with our bespoke systems.

Energy efficiency

There’s no need to waste electricity by having lights on in the daytime. Home automation systems mean you can set the lights to go off when you don’t need them.

Bespoke lighting

You want lighting to enhance and complement your exquisite interior design. We take time to assess your natural light and decor style to find the best options to suit your beautiful home.

Easy to use

Our systems may be high tech, but they’re simple to use. You can even use voice control (like with Alexa). It’s so much easier than fiddling with old style light switches and dimmer switches, brightening and dimming lighting levels to try and get it right.

Questions

Lighting and shading: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

How much does it cost to install a lighting automation system?

As each project is bespoke to you, the price will depend on your requirements. The best idea is to call us for a free consultation and we can talk you through the process and likely costs.

How disruptive is the smart lighting installation process?

We know how annoying and painful it can be to have tradespeople disrupting the status quo in your home and making a mess. We aim to minimise disruption. We’ll do as much work as we can on our site rather than yours. Our professional engineers, electricians and installers are super experienced and efficient, so we provide quick results.

Is it compatible with Android and Apple smart devices?

Yes, there’s compatibility and they can be used as smart hubs. The functionality of smart home lighting remains the same whether you use Apple or Android smartphone apps. You can use voice control via smart home devices like Amazon Alexa, Amazon Echo or Google Home. The app makes it simple to add a new device when you need to as well.

Can I choose my style of smart light switch?

There are some ugly old light fixtures and fittings out there. We totally get that you don’t want to ruin the aesthetic of your room with them. We offer a range of finishes so you can choose the best smart switch to integrate with your interior design.

Can you just automate lighting for a single room?

It’s totally up to you and what you want. We can automate your entire house or simply focus on a single room. We provide indoor and outdoor lighting systems. We offer a flexible service to suit our clients.

Will I need specific light bulbs?

Our high tech solutions use smart bulbs rather than old school, traditional light bulbs. The lighting products include smart light bulbs, smart downlights, smart LED bulbs and strip LED lights, smart PIR security lights and smart switches.

Do you work with other technology brands?

We work with leading technology brands, from Lutron and Control4 to Sonance and Sonos. They include Lutron , Rako, Control4, Sonance, Paradigm and Fortress, and we are Lutron lighting control installation specialists. We’re also super proud to be a Control4 Circle of Excellence winner in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and a Platinum approved Control4 dealer.

Do I need new wiring for a lighting control system?

Not always. Wireless systems such as Lutron RadioRA 3 and Rako's wireless range are designed for finished homes, with dimming modules fitted where the lighting cable is already exposed, such as a downlight cut-out, and keypads that need no new cable. A new build or a full renovation is the time for a wired system, with the dimmers grouped in a central rack. Many houses end up with a mix of the two.

Will a lighting control system work with my existing light fittings?

Usually, as long as the fittings and their drivers are dimmable and suit the type of dimmer being used. Some LED lamps and drivers flicker or buzz on the wrong dimmer, so we check every fitting during the design and suggest replacements only where they are needed. Doing this before the ceilings are closed up is far easier than chasing a flicker after the room is decorated.
