Versatile home entertainment and cinema room in Esher
The dream for this family in Esher was a versatile living space that could transform seamlessly into a high-end cinema room.
The client’s pain points
The new entertainment space needed to be multi-functional. However, open plan media rooms often suffer from poor acoustics and intrusive technology. We needed to overcome those challenges to deliver a stylish space that delivered a cinema-grade experience as well as an everyday entertainment area.
The client’s dream
“We wanted a space that felt like an elegant entertainment lounge but could transform into a true cinema when needed. Every design decision was made to balance aesthetics, performance, and ease of use.”
Our client’s goal was to seamlessly integrate a bar, snooker table, and a top-tier media room into one open-plan environment without compromising on performance or aesthetics. This versatile, high end entertainment space needed to feel luxurious yet practical, allowing for an easy transition between casual entertainment and a full cinematic experience.
Our solutions
There were many criteria to consider with the design of this versatile room. The open plan space needed to serve multiple functions—a stylish bar area, a gaming space with a snooker table, and a high-performance cinema/media room. Overall, we wanted to ensure we attained the key goals of style, performance, and ease of use.
This notion of transformation was central to our design. We added smart lighting zones which are brilliant for creating specific moods. You can easily switch up the ambience whether you’re in the mood for a party, relaxed viewing, or immersive cinema experience.
A Samsung 85” TV served as the day-to-day casual viewing device. But when our clients wanted to switch to full cinema mode, the discreetly positioned projector lowered from the ceiling. The 120” projection screen dropped in front of the TV, instantly creating a breathtakingly immersive viewing experience. The cinema setup delivered immersive visuals and powerful, precise sound.
When it’s not movie time, the motorised projector and screen remain hidden, retaining a clean and modern aesthetic. Our careful design meant no visible wires or bulky equipment. We ensured the space remained sleek and luxurious at all times.
To overcome the sound issues in the open plan space, a 5.2.2 KEF THX speaker system was chosen to ensure powerful, immersive audio. To enhance sound performance further and prevent unwanted echo, we sensitively integrated acoustic treatment into the design.
Importantly, the multi-functional space wasn’t complicated to use. The entire system was designed for one-touch operation. Everything can be controlled effortlessly via a smart home automation system, allowing for instant control of AV, lighting, and sound modes.
“The result is exactly what I envisioned—a space that effortlessly transitions from a stylish entertainment lounge to a high-performance home cinema at the touch of a button.”
The challenges
Open-plan rooms fight good sound, and nothing could be on show. We designed acoustic treatment for the open volume, concealed every cable and component, and hid both projector and screen in the ceiling so the cinema disappears at the touch of a button.
This space has completely transformed the way we entertain. The attention to detail in the design and technology integration is outstanding. Whether it’s a casual evening with friends or a full cinema experience, everything works flawlessly at the touch of a button. The picture quality is breathtaking, the sound is immersive, and the entire system blends perfectly into the space. It’s exactly what I envisioned and more.
