Red cinema room with a star ceiling in Surrey
A cinema room left unfinished by the previous owner, completed as a red, star-lit room where three children and their friends can watch films and the adults can settle in for their favourite box sets.
Watch the finished room
A cinema room someone else had started
When our clients bought the house, it came with a cinema room that the previous owner had started but never finished. Rather than live with half a room, they wanted it completed properly, and both of the interior designers they spoke to recommended us for the job.
A family room first, a cinema second
Our clients have three children and regularly host family get-togethers. The brief was a room that works for everyone: somewhere the teenage girls can watch films with their friends, and where the adults can settle in for their favourite box sets. That meant it had to look special, sound properly cinematic and still be simple enough for anyone in the family to switch on.
From a green design to a red room
Part of our cinema room design process is showing clients 3D visuals before any work starts. Our clients saw a cinema room visual we had created for a project in Dubai and loved it, but asked for the colour scheme to change from green to red. That one decision set the tone for the whole room: deep red walls, aubergine seats and a star-lit ceiling above.

What we built
We completed the build-out of the room ourselves, finishing the walls in fabric panels and red suede. Backlit accent panels, lit with Orko Lighting LED strip, outline the walls and give the room its glow when the main lights are down.

Overhead is a custom star ceiling by Orko Lighting, 5 m long, above the seating.

The picture comes from a Sony XW5000 4K laser projector onto a Grandview acoustically transparent screen, which lets sound pass through it, so speakers can sit behind the picture.

Sound is a Monitor Audio Creator Series speaker package in a 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos layout: seven speakers around the room, two subwoofers and two height channels. An Anthem MRX 1140 AV receiver drives the system.
The seating is Cinema Deco Knightsbridge cinema seats in an aubergine fabric finish, a deeper tone that works with the red walls.

Easy enough for the whole family
With teenagers and guests using the room, it had to be simple to run. Control4 room automation ties the system together, so the room is simple for anyone in the family to run.
