Meridian home cinema and multi-room audio: Control4 integration and support for Meridian Audio owners

Meridian Audio is a British company, based in Huntingdon, that makes digital active (DSP) loudspeakers, in-wall speakers and the 200 Series of zone and theatre controllers for cinemas and multi-room systems. As a Control4 Platinum dealer in Surrey and London, we can help Meridian owners bring an existing system into Control4 and Lutron scenes.

What makes a Meridian DSP loudspeaker different

In a conventional system, an amplifier sends power down a cable to passive speakers. Meridian turns that around. Its digital active loudspeakers have the processing and amplification inside the cabinet and receive music as a digital signal over Meridian's SpeakerLink connection. The crossover is handled in software, and Meridian tailors those filters to each arrangement of drive units, a technique it calls Bespoke Signal Mapping.

The current home range on meridian-audio.com falls into three groups:

  • Freestanding speakers: the flagship DSP8000 XE, the sculpted DSP9, the Special Edition DSP7200 and DSP5200 (each also offered in an HC version), and the compact DSP3200 and DSP3300. Meridian suggests three DSP3300s as matched left, centre and right speakers for a smaller cinema.
  • Architectural speakers: the DSP750 and DSP730 in-wall models, refreshed as 2026 Editions, which need a mounting depth of 100mm, and the DSW600 in-wall subwoofer, which reaches down to 24 Hz.
  • 200 Series electronics: the 271 Digital Theatre Controller, the 218 Zone Controller, the 251 Powered Zone Controller, the 210 Streamer, the 258 eight-channel amplifier and the UHD121, which links a TV's HDMI eARC socket to Meridian speakers.

If you came to Meridian through a Range Rover, a Jaguar or an LG soundbar, those are separate automotive and licensing businesses. The home products above are the ones that matter for a house.

Why owners choose Meridian for a cinema or a whole house

Three things set Meridian apart once it is in a real home.

  • One speaker family for every room. The same digital approach runs from a freestanding DSP9 in a living room to DSP750s behind a cinema screen, so a recording keeps its character as you move from room to room.
  • Built for hidden installation. The 2026 Editions of the DSP750 and DSP730 use a sealed aluminium enclosure with a double baffle, which Meridian says keeps their sound consistent whatever the wall is made of. For speakers mounted under a screen, a feature called Image Elevation helps lift dialogue up towards the picture.
  • Bass managed in software. Resonance Control uses the room's dimensions to reduce its main resonances, which Meridian notes are worse with in-wall speakers. The DSW600 can extend the bass of in-wall speakers in a music room or play the LFE channel in a cinema, alone or in multiples.

The 200 Series fills the gaps between those speakers. A 218 or 251 can create a high-resolution music zone in a kitchen or study, both act as Roon endpoints, and the 210 adds Spotify Connect, Bluetooth and UPnP streaming to any system with a SpeakerLink input.

Active speakers in the walls: planning a Meridian architectural system

  • Depth and wall build. The DSP750 and DSP730 need only 100mm of depth, which suits a stud wall or a battened masonry wall, but each position still has to clear pipes, joists and insulation.
  • Power and signal at every speaker. Each architectural speaker needs a mains supply and a SpeakerLink run, and the 2026 Editions add IR and RS-232 for system integration. Mark these on the electrical drawings, not just the AV ones.
  • Centre channels under the screen. If the screen is not acoustically transparent, the centre speaker usually goes below it, which is the position Image Elevation is designed for. Our guide to home cinema room layout explains the trade-offs.
  • Bass in the wall or in the room. Meridian describes a DSW600 paired with one of its architectural speakers as a full-range, two-box in-wall solution. A freestanding subwoofer gives more freedom to move it once the room is finished.
  • Finishes. The 2026 Editions have magnet-attached grilles that can be painted to match the wall, which helps in a period house. Our guide to technology in listed and period homes covers the other constraints those buildings bring.

Changing a speaker position after plastering is expensive, so we would settle the drawings with the architect and interior designer before first fix.

Our approach

How we would approach Meridian in your home

Meridian sells through its own distributor network. Planning the house around the products is where we can help:

  • Decide what each room needs. A cinema needs a surround processor feeding a 271. The 271 accepts 16 digital channels on a DB25 connector wired to Trinnov's pin layout, and 16 AES channels on RJ45 sockets for Datasat and Storm Audio processors. A kitchen may need only a 218 and a pair of speakers. A TV room may need nothing more than a UHD121, so the TV's own remote controls the volume.
  • Plan power and SpeakerLink early. Active speakers need mains power at every position as well as a signal cable, which changes what the electrician runs during a renovation.
  • Design the network. Meridian recommends an unmanaged switch between a 271 and the router, and the 218 relies on the network for control. Both belong in our home network design.
  • Connect it to control. Then the system can be linked to Control4, where a suitable driver exists, as described below.

For a house with music in several rooms, the zone layout follows the approach on our multi-room AV page.

Meridian Audio and Control4: what is supported today

Control4's own driver database lists drivers for many earlier Meridian products, including G Series and 500 Series electronics, the 810 Reference Video System and a serial driver for Meridian DSP loudspeakers. Control4 wrote those drivers between 2012 and 2015.

For the current 200 Series, Meridian states that the 218 and 271 accept IP control from third-party control systems, and the 271 also takes infrared and a trigger input. Driver support varies by model, so we confirm the right driver for each unit before promising any feature. With that in place, Control4 and Meridian can work together like this:

  • a Movie scene selects the processor feeding the 271, wakes the Meridian speakers and brings the cinema's Lutron lighting down;
  • a Dinner scene starts a playlist through the 218 in the kitchen at a quiet level while the dining room settles to an evening lighting setting;
  • a Goodnight button switches every Meridian zone off as the house lights go out.

Families who already choose music in the Sonos app can keep doing so: the 218 and 251 support Works with Sonos, used with a Sonos Port or Sonos Connect.

Already own Meridian?

Already own Meridian speakers? How we can help

Many Meridian systems outlast the electronics around them. If you have one, talk to us about:

  • connecting older Meridian electronics that have Control4-listed drivers, such as G Series processors, to a new or existing Control4 system;
  • pairing an existing set of Meridian DSP speakers with a modern Dolby Atmos processor through a 271. Meridian says most earlier DSP models work with it, except the D600 and the original D6000, though some need an AC12 adaptor or changed settings;
  • adding a UHD121 so a new TV's remote controls the Meridian speakers again;
  • tracing network problems when a 218 zone stops responding;
  • deciding whether to keep, extend or replace the system, or move it to a new room.

Our takeover and maintenance service covers the control and network side of systems another company installed. Repairs and warranty questions remain with Meridian.

Meridian DSP speakers or passive speakers with separate amplifiers?

Both routes can produce an outstanding cinema. A passive system, such as the speakers on our KEF page, lets you choose the processor, amplifiers and room correction separately and change any one of them later. A Meridian system puts the amplification and much of the processing inside each speaker, so there is no amplifier rack for those channels and the speaker's tuning is fixed by the people who designed it. The 271's analogue outputs also allow Meridian and non-Meridian speakers in the same system, so the choice does not have to be all or nothing.

Questions

Meridian: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Does Meridian Audio work with Control4?

Partly, depending on the model. Control4's driver database lists drivers for many earlier Meridian products, such as G Series and 500 Series electronics and a serial DSP loudspeaker driver. For the current 200 Series, Meridian says the 218 and 271 accept IP control from third-party control systems. We check driver support for each unit before planning Control4 scenes around it.

Can Meridian DSP speakers work with a Dolby Atmos processor?

Yes, through the Meridian 271 Digital Theatre Controller. It does not decode surround formats itself. Instead it takes up to 16 digital channels from a processor that does, such as a Trinnov, Datasat or Storm Audio unit, and sends them to Meridian speakers over SpeakerLink. One 271 supports up to 20 outputs, and two can be combined for more.

What does the Meridian 218 do?

The 218 Zone Controller is the hub for one room's music. It accepts analogue and digital sources, feeds Meridian DSP speakers or other equipment, and is controlled over the network, by infrared or from another Meridian product. It is a Roon endpoint, supports Works with Sonos with a Sonos Port or Connect, and can act as a preamp with source and volume control.

Can I use older Meridian speakers with new equipment?

Often, yes. Meridian says most earlier Meridian digital active loudspeakers can be used with the 271, apart from the D600 and the original D6000. Some older models need an AC12 interface or changed settings. A UHD121 can also connect DSP speakers with SpeakerLink to a current TV through HDMI eARC, so the TV remote controls the volume.

Is Meridian Audio a British company?

Yes. Meridian Audio is based in Huntingdon in the UK, and it presents its work as British engineering. Alongside its home products it supplies audio systems to car makers including Range Rover, Jaguar and Kia, and its sound tuning appears in LG products. The DSP loudspeakers and 200 Series are its home range.
