Origin Acoustics speakers: the collections explained

Origin Acoustics, now based in Las Vegas, Nevada, launched its first speaker line in 2014, but its story starts much earlier. Two of its designers, Ken Humphries and Ed Haase, came up with a flush-mounting in-wall loudspeaker in the early 1980s, built in-wall and in-ceiling speakers for other brands, and launched SpeakerCraft in 1994. After SpeakerCraft was sold, they rejoined Jeremy Burkhardt, who had led its growth, and started Origin.

The catalogue is organised by where a speaker has to go:

  • Director Collection: the premium in-ceiling line, with drivers from 3 to 10 inches.
  • Composer Collection: thin, bezel-less in-wall speakers, including tall theatre and LCR models for a cinema front wall.
  • ThinFit: models that mount with less than two inches of clearance behind the board.
  • Minimal Opening: grilles about 4 inches across, with the woofer housed in a back box in the void above.
  • BLENDS: invisible speakers that share one back box across sizes, plus matching subwoofers.
  • Marine (Explorer) Collection: IP66-rated, sealed versions for waterfront homes.
  • Outdoor: Seasons Landscape, Acoustic Landscape and Seasons Outdoor speakers, with subwoofers that can be buried.

Origin also makes amplifiers, made-to-order InstaWidth soundbars and a cinema range called Marquee.

Why Origin suits awkward ceilings and long gardens

Plenty of brands make one good in-ceiling range and leave the installer to make it fit. Origin's catalogue reads more like a toolkit for the problems that appear once a ceiling is opened. When a duct or a steel beam turns up exactly where a speaker was meant to go, ThinFit is the answer, because it needs almost no depth. A ceiling planned around small designer lights can take Minimal Opening grilles at a similar scale. Where nothing may show, BLENDS goes in, with a reusable placeholder protecting the opening while the boarding and finishing go on around it. Several Origin ranges also pivot, so sound can be aimed at the sofa when the joists force a speaker off-centre.

Outside, the range reaches further than most. Origin's Seasons Landscape speakers and subwoofers carry a 70 or 100 volt transformer tap, which Origin says can power each speaker up to half a mile from the source. On a large plot, a lawn, an orchard and a pool terrace can all run from electronics in the house, with no amplifiers out in the garden. Origin also says it designed the first luxury bollard loudspeaker, for paths and drives where a speaker can stand in plain view.

Planning Origin landscape speakers: zones, cable and bass

  • Pick the system type for each area. Acoustic Landscape systems arrive as four satellites and a 10-inch subwoofer, expandable to eight satellites, which suits a single border or terrace. Seasons Landscape uses separate LS speakers and OSUB subwoofers that can be spread across a bigger site.
  • Decide on 70V early. Long runs favour the 70 or 100 volt taps and a matching amplifier, while short runs near the house can stay at 8 ohms. The choice changes the cable and the electronics, so it belongs at design stage.
  • Lay ducts before the turf. Seasons Landscape subwoofers are buried with only an earth-coloured cap showing, so their positions and ducts are best fixed while the landscaper still has the ground open, which is why our outdoor AV planning works from the landscape drawings.
  • Point sound towards the house. Aiming satellites inwards keeps music on your lawn and out of the neighbours' garden.
  • Match the rating to the spot. Seasons Outdoor speakers are rated IPx7, which Origin says means they can be submerged to three feet; the Marine Collection is IP66 with stainless steel fixings for homes by the water.

If streaming apps will be used outdoors, our data and Wi-Fi networks team would extend coverage to the terrace as part of the same plan.

Our approach

How we would approach Origin Acoustics in your home

We would treat an Origin scheme as a room-by-room selection rather than one model used everywhere:

  • Survey the voids first. Before choosing models, we would check ceiling depths, joist directions and anything already up there, then match each room to Director, ThinFit, Minimal Opening or BLENDS.
  • Draw speakers on the lighting plan. Grilles and downlights share the ceiling, so we would set them out together and keep Minimal Opening grilles in line with lights of a similar size.
  • Split the garden into zones. A dining terrace, a lawn for parties and a pool house each want their own level. Our outdoor AV service would plan those zones, the cable routes and where the buried subwoofers sit.
  • Keep the electronics together. Amplifiers, including any 70V units feeding the garden, would live in the equipment rack as part of a multi-room AV system with one way to control it.

For a cinema or media room, we would compare Origin's Composer theatre speakers and the Marquee range with dedicated cinema brands at the home cinema design stage, looking at output, seating distance and how much wall depth is free.

Origin Acoustics with Control4 and Lutron

On a big plot, control starts with amplification. Origin's landscape speakers are passive, and on long runs they are fed from 70 or 100 volt amplifiers in the house, so every garden zone is really an amplifier channel in the rack. Those channels are what Control4 runs: which zone plays, from which source, and how loudly. Origin speakers need no Control4 driver, and none was listed in Control4's driver database at the time of writing. Lutron lighting comes in through Control4 as well, which is where the garden lights and the garden music meet:

  • Dusk: as the Lutron garden lighting comes on at sunset, the terrace zone starts a low playlist through the landscape speakers.
  • Pool party: one keypad button in the pool house raises the pool and lawn zones and the path lights together, while the rooms indoors stay as they were.
  • Considerate evenings: after ten o'clock the outdoor zones will not rise past a gentle level, whichever button or app is used.
  • Kitchen mornings: the radio comes on quietly through the kitchen ceiling speakers with the first lights of the day.

Already own Origin Acoustics?

Already have Origin Acoustics speakers?

Origin speakers can come with a house purchase, with little paperwork and an installer who has since moved on. A sensible first step is a survey: we can trace and test the cable runs, work out which collection each grille belongs to and check what is driving the garden zones. The fixes that follow tend to be practical ones: new or reconfigured amplifiers, garden zones rebalanced as the planting has grown, and Control4 programming so the music follows your Lutron scenes. Where an older Control4 system is already in place, see upgrading an older Control4 system, and for installations by other firms, our takeover and maintenance service.

BLENDS or Director: which Origin ceiling speaker?

Director speakers sit behind a slim grille and come in the widest spread of sizes, so they are the practical pick for kitchens, family rooms and anywhere output matters most. BLENDS hides the speaker entirely and suits formal rooms where the ceiling finish is the point, but it has to be planned before the boards go up, which is why Origin sells a placeholder for that stage. Many houses are best served by using both, room by room.

Questions

Origin Acoustics: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Is Origin Acoustics related to SpeakerCraft?

By history, yes. Origin says its designers Ken Humphries and Ed Haase launched SpeakerCraft in 1994, and that Jeremy Burkhardt led SpeakerCraft's growth. After SpeakerCraft was acquired by a larger company, the three came back together and Origin Acoustics launched its first speaker line in 2014. Origin now lists its address in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What are Origin Acoustics landscape speakers?

Origin has two landscape families. Acoustic Landscape systems include four two-way satellites on spikes and a 10-inch subwoofer that can be buried or set in hardscape, expandable to eight satellites. Seasons Landscape pairs LS speakers, which use titanium tweeters, with OSUB subwoofers, all with 70 or 100 volt taps for long cable runs; the subwoofers are buried with only a cap showing.

Which Origin Acoustics in-ceiling speakers suit a shallow ceiling?

ThinFit is the shallow option. Origin says it mounts with less than two inches of clearance, and lists mounting depths of 36 to 42 millimetres across the range. Minimal Opening is the opposite case: its grilles are small, but the main woofer model needs about 14 inches of depth above the ceiling, so it suits deep voids rather than shallow ones.

Can Origin Acoustics garden speakers be run from Control4?

Yes. Each garden zone is an amplifier channel, often on a 70 or 100 volt amplifier kept in the house, and Control4 controls those amplifiers: which zone plays, from what source and at what level. That lets music follow Lutron garden lighting at dusk or be held down late in the evening. Nothing is needed at the speaker end, because the speakers themselves are passive.

What is Origin Acoustics BLENDS?

BLENDS is Origin's invisible speaker range. The models share the same back box, which Origin says makes pre-wiring and later upgrades easier, and a reusable placeholder protects the opening while the walls and ceilings are finished. The range covers 6-inch and 8-inch speakers plus in-wall subwoofers, with metal and fire-rated back boxes for masonry or fire-rated ceilings.

Does Origin Acoustics make home cinema speakers?

Yes. Its Marquee range includes on-wall or in-wall front speakers, matching surrounds, a three-way pivoting in-ceiling speaker for height or surround channels, and a 15-inch subwoofer paired with Origin's own subwoofer amplifier. The Composer in-wall collection also has tall theatre and LCR models for a cinema front wall.
