Denon home cinema systems built around one AV receiver, in Surrey and London

Denon makes AV receivers that decode Dolby Atmos, correct for the room and power the speakers from one chassis. We design Denon-based home cinema systems for mid-size rooms in Surrey and London: an AVC-X4800 powers the KEF Ci speakers beneath a Weybridge family home, and a Denon receiver sits behind a KEF THX package in Oxshott.

Denon's AV receiver range, from AVC-X4800H to AVC-A1H

Denon, whose own history runs back to 1910, has built its home cinema business on the AV receiver: one chassis that switches the video, handles Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced and DTS:X Pro, measures the room and drives the speakers. The UK range climbs in channel count. The figures that matter for a cinema are how many speakers the receiver can power itself, how many it can process, and how many subwoofers it can manage separately:

  • AVC-X4800H: nine amplified channels rated at 125 watts each, processing for 11.4 channels, and four independent subwoofer outputs.
  • AVC-X6800H: eleven amplified channels, 13.4 processing channels and four independent subwoofers, which Denon positions for dedicated cinema rooms.
  • AVC-A10H: thirteen amplified channels and four subwoofer outputs, one step below the flagship.
  • AVC-A1H: the flagship, with fifteen amplified channels, 15.4 processing and support for layouts up to 9.4.6, handcrafted at Denon's Shirakawa Audio Works in Japan.

Below these sit the AVC-X3800H, the newer 9.4-channel AVC-X3900H, and the AVR-X and AVR-S ranges for smaller rooms. The X4800H, X6800H and A1H all include Audyssey MultEQ XT32 room correction, and Denon offers Dirac Live as a paid upgrade.

Why a Denon receiver suits a mid-size Atmos room

A mid-size cinema with one or two rows of seats is usually well served by a 5.2.4, 5.2.2 or 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos layout. That is nine speaker channels or fewer, which an AVC-X4800H can power from its own amplifiers. The whole system then lives in one box: one unit to ventilate, one set of connections to label, one calibration to run and one device for the control system to talk to.

Four independent subwoofer outputs on the X4800H and above matter more than the headline wattage. With two rows of seats, bass varies a lot from one chair to the next, and several subwoofers positioned and tuned separately even it out across the room. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 is included, and Dirac Live and Dirac Live Bass Control can be added with licences later without changing hardware.

Finally, the receiver plays music as well as films. HEOS is built in, alongside AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, so the cinema system can stream from the same apps as the rest of the house.

Is a Denon receiver enough for your room?

Count speakers before comparing models. Take 7.2.4, a common Atmos layout: seven ear-level speakers, two subwoofers and four overhead, so eleven amplified channels. Using Denon's own figures, and assuming a mid-size room with speakers of typical sensitivity:

  • Up to nine speakers (5.2.4 or 7.2.2): an AVC-X4800H powers everything itself.
  • Eleven speakers (7.2.4): the X4800H can process them, but two channels need a small external stereo amplifier. Alternatively, the AVC-X6800H amplifies all eleven.
  • Fifteen speakers (up to 9.4.6): only the AVC-A1H amplifies that many in one chassis.
  • More bass than one subwoofer can give: plan for the four independent subwoofer outputs from the X4800H upwards.
  • Heat and space: a receiver doing all the amplification runs warm, so the equipment cupboard needs airflow.

A receiver stops being the right answer when the room is large, the speakers are demanding, or the layout runs past fifteen channels. That is where separate processors and power amplifiers come in. Each number in a layout name is explained in how Dolby Atmos layouts are numbered.

Our work

Denon at the centre of our Weybridge and Oxshott cinemas

  • Weybridge basement cinema: the basement of a large family home, shared between a cinema and a sports bar. Its Denon AVC-X4800 runs KEF Ci speakers throughout: Ci200QS surrounds, Ci200QR Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers and a Ci200QSb subwoofer. An Epson TW-9400 supplies the picture. Control4 drives the room from an app or a single handheld remote, with downlights and lamps grouped into mood scenes for match nights and films.
  • Oxshott dedicated cinema: a Denon AV receiver is the hub of the KEF THX package, a 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos layout whose front speakers stand behind the acoustically transparent screen. The previous system lacked clarity, so acoustic treatment was worked into the room to cut echo, especially in dialogue-heavy scenes. Control4, operated from a colour touchscreen remote, switches between movie and sports modes.

In both rooms Control4 means nobody reaches for the receiver's own remote. The speakers are covered on our KEF page.

Integration

Denon with Control4, Lutron and HEOS

The AVC-X4800H lists IP control and RS-232 control, so a Control4 system can set its input, listening mode and volume directly. The flagship AVC-A1H goes further, with a custom install mode that Denon says is compatible with Control4 SDDP certification, plus remote monitoring so an integrator can check the unit without a site visit. Being Control4 Platinum dealers, we build those connections into every scene:

  • Film: Control4 switches the receiver to the film player and the right Atmos mode as the lights go down.
  • Match: a lower starting volume and a sound mode suited to commentary, with brighter lighting, as in the Oxshott sports mode.
  • Music: HEOS streaming plays through the cinema speakers without the projector or TV switching on.
  • Second zone: the X4800H supports three zones, so a bar area can have its own music while the cinema is idle.
  • Triggers: three DC trigger outputs can start an external amplifier or a motorised screen with the receiver.

Where the dimmers are Lutron, the same buttons drive them too, and our page on whole-house Control4 systems explains the rest.

Already own Denon?

Already have a Denon receiver? We can help

If your Denon was calibrated once on installation day and never again, a fresh Audyssey MultEQ XT32 run after new furniture, seating or a screen change often makes an audible difference. On supported models we can install a Dirac Live licence and calibrate with it instead. We also connect existing Denon receivers to Control4, so one remote replaces the Denon handset, set up HEOS streaming, add Atmos height speakers within the channels your model has, and tell you honestly when a newer receiver is the better step. If you are moving house, we can reinstall and recalibrate it in the new room. For equipment someone else installed, the takeover and maintenance service is where to begin. Hardware faults and warranty work belong with Denon.

Compare

Denon or Marantz?

The two brands are related. HARMAN lists both Denon and Marantz in its Sound United group, but they are sold as separate brands. In our projects Denon is the all-in-one choice: one receiver at the centre of a mid-size room, as in Weybridge and Oxshott. When a room calls for a separate processor and power amplifier, as in our Esher entertainment room, we look to Marantz, and to Anthem where calibration is the priority. Our Anthem and Marantz page covers that side.

Questions

Denon: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

Can a Denon AVC-X4800H run a 7.2.4 layout on its own?

Almost. The AVC-X4800H processes 11.4 channels but amplifies nine, so a 7.2.4 layout, with eleven speakers, needs a small two-channel power amplifier for the remaining pair. Layouts up to nine speakers, such as 5.2.4 or 7.2.2, run entirely from the receiver. If you would rather keep everything in one box, the AVC-X6800H amplifies eleven channels.

Does a Denon AV receiver work with Control4?

Yes. The AVC-X4800H lists IP and RS-232 control, which is how a Control4 system sets its input, sound mode and volume, and our Weybridge and Oxshott cinemas both run Denon receivers under Control4. The flagship AVC-A1H also has a custom install mode that Denon describes as compatible with Control4 SDDP certification.

What is HEOS on a Denon receiver?

HEOS is the multi-room streaming platform built into current Denon receivers. It lets the receiver stream from music services through the HEOS app and play the same or different music as other HEOS products around the house. The AVC-X4800H also supports AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect and is listed as Roon Tested, so the cinema speakers double as a music system.

Are Denon and Marantz the same company?

They share an owner but remain separate brands. HARMAN lists both Denon and Marantz within its Sound United group, alongside Bowers & Wilkins, Polk Audio and Definitive Technology. Each keeps its own product lines. We tend to use Denon receivers for mid-size all-in-one rooms and Marantz for processor and power amplifier systems, such as our Esher room.

Can I add Dirac Live to my Denon receiver?

On supported models, yes. Denon lists Dirac Live as an upgrade for receivers such as the AVC-X4800H, AVC-X6800H and AVC-A1H, bought as a licence key. Dirac Live Bass Control, which improves how several subwoofers work together, is a separate licence. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 is built in, so Dirac is an option rather than a necessity.

How does the Denon AVC-X4800H differ from the AVC-X6800H?

Mainly the amplification. The AVC-X4800H powers nine channels and processes 11.4, while the AVC-X6800H powers eleven channels and processes 13.4. Both share four independent subwoofer outputs, HEOS and Audyssey MultEQ XT32 calibration. Denon positions the X6800H for dedicated cinema rooms, and it suits a 7.2.4 layout without an extra amplifier.
