What is Wisdom Audio?

Tom and Debi Bohlender founded Wisdom Audio in 1996 to build speakers around thin-film planar magnetic drivers arranged as a line source. Two years later the company moved to Carson City, Nevada, where it still designs, engineers and manufactures its products. Planar magnetic drivers are difficult to make, so Wisdom builds its own: a flat, tensioned film diaphragm with magnets behind it, in front of it, or both, rather than a cone and dome.

The current catalogue includes:

  • Sage Series: planar magnetic speakers for in-wall, on-wall, in-ceiling and freestanding use, first shown at CEDIA in 2007.
  • Sage Cinema: the Line 2, Line 3 and Line 4 line source models, a Hybrid Line Source, and the Point 2 V2 and Point 3 GT point source models, aimed at private cinemas and media rooms.
  • Insight Series and Wisdom Series: further in-wall and on-wall ranges.
  • Subwoofers: models for walls and ceilings, plus designs based on Wisdom's RTL (regenerative transmission line) principle, which drives a folded internal pipe from both sides of the woofer.
  • Electronics: SA-2, SA-3 and SA-8 amplifiers, each with a DSP version.

Why line source speakers suit a cinema with several rows

Most speakers behave like a point: sound spreads out as a sphere, so its level falls away quickly with distance. A tall line source spreads sound as a cylinder instead. Wisdom's own figures show the difference: between one and four metres, a point source loses 12 dB and a line source only 6 dB. In a room with a second or third row of seats, the back row hears close to the same level as the front, and nobody at the front is blasted so that the back can hear.

Wisdom also says a true line source removes most floor and ceiling reflections from about 530 Hz upwards, and that wall mounting removes the reflection from the wall behind. The catch is size. Wisdom says a true line source in a home needs to be roughly five to six feet tall or more. A single Sage Cinema Line 3 module is 194 cm tall but only 13.3 cm deep, made for in-baffle, in-wall or on-wall mounting behind a projection screen or fabric wall. That shape is why Wisdom belongs in a room built for films rather than a living room with a TV.

Planning a Wisdom room: modules, overheads and the rack

  • Choose line or point source for each position. Line source models suit the screen wall where height allows. The Point 3 GT can be fitted horizontally or vertically and runs passively from one amplifier channel, which helps wherever a tall module will not fit.
  • Plan overhead speakers with the ceiling. The Sage iCS7a is a passive in-ceiling model with an angled planar magnetic driver aimed at the seats. It needs about 16.4 cm of depth and a 25.9 cm cut-out, and an optional laser tool helps align it. For where height speakers belong, see how Dolby Atmos layouts work.
  • Allow space in the rack. An SA-8 is 2U high with eight channels, and Wisdom says units can be stacked flat without undue heat. A large layout can still need several, so the rack needs room and airflow.
  • Use DSP versions where the speakers need them. The SA-8 DSP adds active crossover, delay, gain and EQ profiles for every channel, FIR filters and a Dante input.
  • Buy enough power. Wisdom warns that an amplifier pushed into clipping can damage tweeters, and advises buying more power than you expect to need.
Our approach

How we would approach Wisdom Audio in your home

  • Check the height first. We would measure the finished ceiling height against the speaker modules, the screen frame and any seating riser before anything else is drawn.
  • Design the front wall as a baffle. The left, centre and right channels hide behind an acoustically transparent screen, so the baffle wall, screen frame and acoustic treatment would be planned around them. Treating a room and soundproofing it are different jobs, as our treatment and soundproofing explainer sets out.
  • Count amplifier channels early. Some Wisdom models run passively from one channel each; others, such as the Sage Cinema Line 3, need two channels and external DSP. That decides how many SA amplifiers the rack holds and how much ventilation it needs.
  • Plan for Wisdom's calibration. Wisdom provides factory calibration and system commissioning on all Wisdom Audio projects, carried out on site. We would plan the programme so the room is finished, furnished and quiet when its calibrators arrive.

Seating and screen size come from the same drawings: see our guides to home cinema room layout and screen size and viewing distance, and our luxury home cinema service.

Integration

Wisdom Audio with Control4, Lutron and the cinema processor

In a Wisdom cinema, the order in which things wake up matters more than any speaker driver. The cinema processor comes first. Wisdom names Lyngdorf among the processors its calibration service covers, and Control4's driver database lists the Lyngdorf MP-60, so that pairing is one well-documented route; our Steinway Lyngdorf and Lyngdorf Audio page has more. The amplifiers come next: Wisdom's SA-8 accepts a 12V trigger and passes one on through a built-in delay sequencer, so a stack of amplifiers powers up in turn behind the processor. The speakers themselves are passive, so Control4 never addresses them directly, and its database listed no Wisdom Audio driver at the time of writing. Lighting is the last layer, handled by Lutron through Control4:

  • Start film: one button powers the projector and processor, the SA amplifiers follow on their triggers, and Lutron fades the room to darkness while the step lights keep a low glow.
  • Interval: pausing the film brings the lights up to a level for walking to the bar, and pressing play returns the room to darkness.
  • Close the cinema: one press by the door turns off the projector, processor and amplifiers and sets the lights to a cleaning level.

Our guide to Lutron keypads shows how those buttons can sit by the cinema door.

Already own a Wisdom Audio system?

A Wisdom room is built around its speakers, and they tend to stay put while the processor, the sources and the control system change. Each change brings work with it: a new processor has to be set up for the Wisdom layout, trigger wiring rechecked, Lutron scenes rebuilt, and the network around the cinema made dependable for streaming and control. We can help with each of those steps, and with arranging a fresh calibration through Wisdom, whose service also covers systems that include other brands' electronics. If another company built the room, our takeover and maintenance service can take it on.

Line source or point source Wisdom speakers?

Line source models give the most even level from the front row to the back and the fewest floor and ceiling reflections, but they need height, and in the case of the Line 3, two amplifier channels and DSP. Point source models such as the Point 3 GT are smaller, run from one channel and can lie horizontally, so they fit lower rooms, surround positions and overheads. A sensible layout often combines them: line sources across the screen wall, point sources around the seats.

Questions

Wisdom Audio: your questions answered

Anything else, call us on 020 3397 9888.

What are planar magnetic speakers?

A planar magnetic driver uses a flat, tensioned film diaphragm with magnets behind it, in front of it, or both, instead of a cone or dome. Wisdom Audio says that, done well, it gives detailed sound, and that it is not the same as a ribbon tweeter. The drivers are hard to manufacture, so Wisdom makes its own in Nevada.

Do Wisdom Audio speakers need special amplifiers?

It depends on the model. The Point 3 GT and the iCS7a in-ceiling speaker are passive and need one amplifier channel each. The Sage Cinema Line 3 needs two channels and external DSP with an active crossover. Wisdom's SA amplifiers, with DSP versions, are designed for this, and Wisdom advises buying more power than you expect to need.

Where are Wisdom Audio speakers made?

In the United States. Wisdom Audio was founded in 1996 by Tom and Debi Bohlender, moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1998, and says its products are designed, engineered and manufactured in the US. It builds its own planar magnetic drivers and opened an experience centre and training academy in 2018.

How tall are Wisdom Audio in-wall cinema speakers?

The tallest are line sources. A Sage Cinema Line 3 module measures 194.3 cm high, 35.6 cm wide and 13.3 cm deep. The point source Point 3 GT is 88.9 cm by 31.8 cm by 15.9 cm and can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Wisdom says a true line source in a home needs to be five to six feet tall or more.

How does Control4 switch on a Wisdom Audio cinema?

Through the cinema processor. Control4 starts the processor, for example a Lyngdorf model with a driver in Control4's database, and the processor's 12V trigger wakes Wisdom's SA-8 amplifiers. The SA-8 also has a trigger output with a built-in delay, so several amplifiers come on in sequence. The speakers are passive, so they need no Control4 driver of their own.

Does Wisdom Audio calibrate its own systems?

Yes. Wisdom says it provides factory calibration and system commissioning on all Wisdom Audio projects, carried out on site, with several levels depending on the processor and the size of the system. It also offers calibration for systems that use other brands' speakers or electronics, and argues that on-site listening matters more than automated room correction alone.
